I have the same phone as you - Epic 4g Touch and yes, Sprint 3G sux monkeyballs. On top of that, I was running CM9 for months and totally forgot about 4G on the phone (it doesn't have a 4G toggle on the notification bar). Now, once I discovered 4G toggle and the fact that this phone is WIMAX capable, I get 4G WIMAX everywhere. I have also noticed improvements in speeds and rate of connection in the past few months. According to Sprint, 4G is active in your area but only as LTE and not WIMAX. You would need to upgrade to a LTE phone to take advantage of it in your area.

To summarize, Sprint is f'in horrible if your option is only 3G.

Current running: 4.2.2 cm10.1 based rom (Beanstalk) - since the source got released i get pretty good battery life as well. My contract is up in June so I still weighing my options. I'll prob stick around (upgrading to LTE as well) as it is the only carrier with unlimited data. Sprint announced new LTE upgrades all over several parts of the country for this year as well.
No under a Contract and like mentioned before we don't have LTE here yet so switching services is the only option

The nexus 4 is a really nice phone, can't beat it for the price Google sells it for. If your willing to get a new t Mobile phone tho there is the S4, note 2 or HTC one also.

I don't remember how a Nexus 4 compares to a GS3, but I thought the GS3 was a huge upgrade from the S2 in speed. It's even more apparent when trying to use the S2 now. If the GS3 and Nexus 4 are similar then yes, IMO it's worth it.

HOWEVER... If this is going to be your phone for a while I would strongly suggest you get something with LTE as the networks slowly improve all of their services.

I live in the Memphis area. Sprint DID just launch their 4G lte. T-mobile coverage is really good in this area, but if you go to say, Mississippi, not so good.
I am personally on Verizon, & I have incredible lte coverage EVERYWHERE. Insane speeds, too.
The GS3 is still a very capable & fast phone. I broke my Note 2 & had to switch back to the GS3 & it is every bit as snappy as the Note 2.

Hell, even Cricket has 4g in the Memphis area.
T-mo is rumored to have their lte network up in this area by the end of this year, but they said the same thing last year...lol

I checked Sensorly and it did show Sprint 4G LTE active for Memphis. No WIMAX though. Have you hit up your nearest Sprint store? Maybe you can test drive 4G LTE speeds there.

Are you?..lol.
I cannot find any documentation ANYWHERE stating that there is a single person getting LTE on t-mobile in the Memphis area. I firmly believe that if it was in fact in this area, there would be some sort of ANYTHING saying so.
But seriously, you cannot go wrong with the price & coverage on tmobile in our area.
AND....there will be LTE here, eventually.

I upgraded from the Galaxy S II to the Nexus 4 last month and there's a BIG difference in performance.
Not sure if the difference is due to the new hardware, Samsung's bloated TouchWiz, or both.

Wait for Google I/O before making any purchasing decision.
