Hey I have been reading some pretty bad reviews for the 460 GTX SE and I was wondering how big of an upgrade it would be from the 9800 GTX+ 512 MB card? I play MMO's on 1920x1080 resolution and would like to get 50+ FPS on medium graphics with games such as RIFT with about 30+ people on screen. Is that possible with this card? The main reason I went with this card was it was $120 on eBay for a brand new one compared to the regular 460 GTX which is $180+. Also on a side note does anyone know if EVGA will give me a warranty on the video card if it was bought brand new from eBay?

My other computer parts are:

6400+ AMD Dual Core 3.2ghz
4 GB DDR2 800 PC6400 Ram
Sata 7200 RPM HD
GIGABYTE GA-MA770-UD3 Motherboard

Is it possible to get 50ish FPS on medium graphics if I have the 460 GTX SE on Rift 1920x1080 with 30+ people on screen?

Thanks!

I have not played Rift but if you lower your res and play the game what kind of FPS are you getting? Your game min FPS can be effected by CPU more then GPU. SC2 is like that.

Your system is well above the minimum requirements and is slightly above the recommended:
http://telarapedia.com/wiki/System_Requirements
Minimum System Specification
Operating system: Windows XP, Vista or 7
Processor: Dual Core 2.0 GHz or better
Memory: 2 GB
Hard disk space: 8.0 GB available
Video: Nvidia GeForce FX 5900, ATI/AMD Radeon X300, Intel GMA X4500 or better.
Sound: DirectX 8.1 compliant card
DirectX®: 9.0c, June 2010 update
Broadband internet connection (DSL, cable modem or other high speed connection)

Recommended System Specification
Operating system: Windows XP, Vista or 7
Processor: Core 2 Duo 2.2 GHz or better
Memory: 4 GB
Hard disk space: 8.0 GB available
Desktop Video: Nvidia GTS 250 or better
Notebook Video: Nvidia GTX 200M series or better
Sound: DirectX 8.1 compliant card
DirectX®: 9.0c, June 2010 update
Broadband internet connection (DSL, cable modem or other high speed connection)

What kind of framerates are you currently getting at 1080p?

You may need a CPU upgrade along with a GPU upgrade to get your desired level of play.

However to answer your question, the 460 SE is a good card, and is especially a good card at the $120 price tag. It should be able to overclock to match or exceed a stock, regular 460, and the extra memory bandwidth and memory probably makes it a better option than the 768MB 460.

I usually get around 30-40 FPS when there is few people on the screen with near lowest settings. When there are 30+ people it drops to around 20i~ FPS on lowest settings. I play at 1920x1080 resolution.

I would even take 40~ FPS at 1920x1080 when 30+ on screen at medium settings with 0AA and 0AF on RIFT.

Also RIFT runs the same engine as Warhammer Online if you wanted to compare that.

On a side note does anyone have a guide on how to overclock your GPU and also know how high I should push the 460 GTX SE?

yeah you are going to want a little more cpu power to get the most out of a significant gpu upgrade.

Thanks for the replies! If I were to get a new CPU wouldn't I need a new motherboard as well?

Also what kind of performance increase can I expect from upgrading the 9800 GTX+ to the 460 GTX SE with my current CPU?

going to a gtx460 se with your current cpu will make a pretty big difference in some games while hardly doing much in others. its really going to come down to the individual game. IMO its time for a more modern cpu to complement your gpu upgrade. I am sure somebody will be able to tell you if you may have the option to upgrade your cpu on your current mobo. so if you can go with a good Phenom X4 then that would be great. I would probably go with the full 336sp gtx460 though to go along with a new Phenom X4.

GIGABYTE GA-MA770-UD3 Motherboard

Register the card on EVGA.com as soon as you get it and you should be alright. They typically require new cards to be registered within 30 days of purchase to honor the warranty should you ever need it down the line. This, of course, assumes the original purchaser didn't already register the card themselves.

I checked on your Gigabyte motherboard and it supports all the way up to Phenom 2 X4 920/940 CPU's with the last BIOS FI.

Like everyone is saying you would be best served to pair that GTX 460 SE with a new CPU to really push it at the highest resolutions.

Thanks for the help! Looks like I'll keep the 460 GTX SE and try to get a new CPU in the near future.
