Well I'm very curious if I can get buy with a video card upgrade. Monitor is the Dell 2001FP (native 1600x) and I'd like to play all games at that resolution. Eye candy doesn't have to be maxed. My 7800Gt does just fine in some games like BF2, 2142, CSS, etc. but others just don't cut it like COD2, COH, etc.

The 8800GTS 640 is a little out of my budget. The 320MB version doesn't have enough power for the 1600x. No I don't plan on going to Vista in soon so really a Dx10 card isn't really important for me.

Can you help me shine some light on this dilemma I have. Do I fork out the cash for a GTS 640? What about looking at a dx9 card? if so, which one?

Thanks all,
-JC

Thanks Greig. Not a bad card at all. I haven't been ATI since the 9800pro days.

I just bit on it, however it's at $199. I'm "upgrading" from a 7900gt, and I put that in quotes because I'll be keeping the 7900gt paired up with a an EPox 8NPA+ SLI and a A64 3200+. My main system will include this card with a DS3, C2D E4300@3Ghz and 2GB PC800 @ 950Mhz. I plan to sell the EPox rig, but I might play BF2 with my son a bit before I do :) It's only $10 now! Anyhow, thanks for the find.

8800GTS will easily handle 1600x1200 resolutions and even 1920x1200 for some games. But it costs full $90 more than the X1950XT 512mb linked above which is a better value at the moment imo. So I'd probably get the ATI card. I dont think 640MB 8800GTS card is worth it for 1600x1200 in any event, at least not for today's games, because 320mb is sufficient for this rez.

In a LOT of games the 8800gts 320mb is good enough to handle 1600*1200 resolutions, with QUITE a lot of eye candy. In some games you'll have to turn down AA and/or some eye candy a bit, but nothing stellar. For a real upgrade, I'd go with the 8800gts 320mb...

And no, I'm not talking out of my ass, I've got a 8800gts 320mb myself, and I'm buying a 1680*1050, 20 inch monitor, and I'm not worried. http://www.xbitlabs.com/articl...8-roundup_9.html#sect1

Look at that link, with that, I really suggest the 8800gts 320mb :)

MarcVenice - Nice Review. Making me think about the Nvidia Products. I've been very happy with my N.7800GT and really wasn't even thinking ati.

Not going to decide tonight. Thanks for the info all.

the 1950xt is a nice videocard, good bang for buck. But if that's all you need I'd stick with the 7800gt a little while longer.
