Upgrade from 550 BE unlocked

My father's machine is running the 550 BE Phenom II. He unlocked it successfully (a few years ago) and he likes to play around with overclocking. He does not game, he's more of a tinkerer. He was looking for a decent processor to drop onto his board and came to me for some help. I'm curious to know what some of you might think.

that's his board

I suggested either the x4 970 or x6 1090. They're both around $150 (give or take). Are these considered a big upgrade from the 550?

Well his unlocked 550 is not physically different from any Phenom II x4 so unless it overclocks poorly there is not much point in getting another x4. He might have fun seeing what he can get out of a x6 if he runs thread intensive tasks.

The last time I talked to him I think he was hitting somewhere around 3.6 or 3.7. I can't remember exactly. I know he likes to make movies, but I'm a novice at that so I can't really speak for any of the apps he might be running.

Well, if he is itching to upgrade he should get a 2500K or 2600K. Otherwise he's fine for another 6 months to a year.

I'd wait for unlock rate statistics before getting a zosma.

Mine is supposed to be here tomorrow, I'll know this weekend if it will unlock and do a light overclock to see how stable it is.

Edit - I did find this thread at Overclock - Unlocked one core only, but his clocks pretty well at low voltages. 1.265 V @ 4.0 GHz - 1.375 volts @ 4.25 GHz (running 4 cores) = quite a bit better than this X2 that I'm using now (4 cores)
