Anyone did something similiar? I really like the notification tray and real multitasking on android. The only things I'll miss are the polish and GAMES.

Would be nice to get thoughts and feedback on this move. If it was an HTC phone I probably wouldn't hesitate, but Samsungs apparent lack of support scares me. Right now, the only other device I'm considering is the iphone 4 just because it's been so solid for me.

I did, and I'm not happy. I'm going to grab a WP7 device, and unfortunately leaning towards a Focus. The Captivate really is a great phone outside the GPS & lag issues. I was out today and tried to find a store to grab some lunch - I drove past 3 stores (on side streets I couldn't see) because it took over 2 minutes to even grab a location.

Ugh, that's the worse. My iPhone does that sometimes, but pretty rare. Are teh GPS and lag issues the main reasons why you're not happy compared to the 3GS. I've been pretty happy with the iPhone, just growing tired of the uniformity and annoying notification system.

I have and Epic 4G. My gps is fine but it does lag sometimes in comparison to my friend's Nexus One (running 2.2) and there havent been any updates.. (Sprint had a few but no 2.2)

What ROM are you running?

I had the Captivate and I liked it except of course the GPS.
I wouldn't get the phone for just that reason.
Its appalling to me that by now, Samsung haven't fix it yet.
I'm using an IP4 now and its great.
My main reason for not wanting the IP4 is the 3.5" screen but the high resolution makes it for it.
Browsing on an IP4 is just as good as a 4" or 4.3" screen.

For me it would be like this.
- $199 IP4 vs $199 Captivate. IP4 easily.
- $199 IP4 vs $99 Captivate. IP4 still.
- $199 IP4 vs FREE Captivate. Flip coin.
- $199

Sheeeeesh, it seems as though it's hit or miss with the GPS. My brother has a captivate and his works fine =/. But a friend who has it says his jumps around.

Captivate GPS will depend on the ROM run. If you are going to stay all stock (no custom ROMs, etc), then just get the ip4.

Is there an application or way to backup contacts pictures and everything off the phone before I flash a new rom to try out. If it ends up blowing up, how bad is it to reimport all my stuff?

Android has built-in wireless contact, calendar, and gmail syncing. Photos are stored on the SD card so you won't lose them of course there`s apps to save texts and back-up apps as well. I`ve installed so many ROMs and have never lost any info.

That is VERY good to hear. Thanks =) Anything you can personally recommend off the top of your head for backing up those things?
