Curious what cards will run Oblivion at 1280x1024 with most of everything on and it be playable? It doesn't have to be smooth as butter all the time. I can handle some slowdown sometimes but not often.

BTW I can't afford top of the line.

would anything any lower maybe cheaper run the game at the mentioned settings? What about the X1800XL or 7800GT?

I get an inconsistent 30fps outside at 1280*1024 in oblivion.

I have an overclocked X1900XT.

My X1800XL can do it...but it runs overclocked...and it's smooth with lots of mods and LOD tweaks.

Get an X1800XL and overclock it if you can find it cheap...but I'd say X1800XT is a great buy.

I would just get the X1800XT 256 I linked to because an X1800XL won't use all of that 512mb and just because it has an X1800XT cooler doesn't necessarily mean that it'll overclock to an X1800XT, so I say just get the X1800XT.

Just goes to show ya even with the fastest single card solution you only get ~30fps. (with max settings)

I get the same and I have 2 7900GT's in SLI running @ 670/1600 and I only get ~30fps outside with everything max.

I too have an X1900XTX & I get +/-30fps @1280x1024 .... however I do get smooth gameplay all the time pretty much without exception & thats a lot more then I can say about my previous NForce 3/6800GT rig (same exact specs otherwise) which turned into a slideshow in outdoor battles even at 1024x768, so any GPU slower then it was will have a very tough time.

Bad news is that at 1280x1024 Oblivion will push any current GPU to its limits... lower resolutions will run pretty well on either a 7900GT or an X1800XT but smoother gameplay will be produced by the XT as resolutions increase because although its maximum fps are the same or lower then the GT, its minimum fps is higher... also it can do HDR & AA which looks great.

I would not go any lower then a X850XT for $150 on the egg. ATI has an advantage in Oblivion, but that's not to say even an XT will run it at max settings.

Beat me to it. Best card to run Oblivion anywhere near the price.

I run Oblivion without HDR, so I use 4xAA/16xAF, I got a big boost in performance by disabling trSSAA in the CP. Not sure about the exact fps, but trSSAA was the difference between a slideshow on the folliage and a smooth gaming experience. Not sure how you are running it, but this works very well if you prefer bloom+AA as opposed to HDR without AA.

I might look into the X850XT then but is the X1800XL worth the extra $30-$50? I'm gonna try and find used first. BTW it would be nice to find something that will last me till DX10 cards come.

Been playing a while. Everything fine. Then I was fighting two gaurds in a grass field, and the whole system slowed down. Anyone have this problem with these specs:

Opteron 170
A8N32
X1800XT 512
2G ram
1280 x 1024
ultra high
HDR
AA x4
AF x8

any suggestions, what does 1152 look like compared to 1280? lower AA?

1900XT/XTX.

1800XT maybe on the lower side, nvidia may have lower min fps in this game, please confirm, in that case performance won't be that great.
anything lower won't be able to take it.
1800XT class is the bare minimum if at all.
what cpu do you have?

The game is still very playable with an X850XT. You simply won't be playing it in super ultra crazy mode. The X1800XT is the best lower high end card for the money. Just as the X850 is the best mid range card for the money.

I'd lower the AA to 2x and bump up AF to 16x. Cousin plays at those settings on a x1900xtx and there will be times (rarely though) where the system struggles still with heavily populated areas, so whats happening to you seems rather normal

Put AA x2 and AF x8 and grass in the INI file to 120. nothing is different. still slows down in meadows when fighters chase after you. maybe my cpu needs to be tweeked a little, some OCing. Maybe even the video card a little. and more suggestion? Plays great everywhere else, just not in high intense battles in the open.
