My system: Asus A8N-e, Opteron 145@2.4 GeForce 7600Gt, 2 GB ram, XP Pro, Sata HD
I want to upgrade my vid card to a HD 4850 or similar card, but, want to use it in my next system upgrade ( Intel Dual or Quad) which will be in the mid/later part of next year .Should I get this card or upgrade everthing at the later date?

If you buy now you will get to enjoy much better performance now, but not realize the full potential of the card until you upgrade the rest of the system.

If you wait and do it all at once, you will likely be able to get a better and/or cheaper video card at that time. However, you sacrifice the benefits detailed above.

Its a trade off.

Do the card first, it might put off your other upgrades for a while as you may be enjoying your gaming experience enough not to notice your thoughts of spending money .... assuming you are buying it because of gaming...

By mid-late next year there's going to be a whole new set of cards. Our 48xx's are going to be old news. With that in mind I think you might not be happy with a 4850 in 9 months.

With your current system a 3870 for $75 AR, a 4830 for $85 AR or a 9800GT for $95 AR would be a huge improvement and be very easy on the pocket book...

I know when I went from a 7800GT to a 3870 on my old Opty system it was like night and day.

Thanks for ya'lls input. For now, I think I'll go with the HD4850. It's going for $120 now. If I wait a month, it will probably be under $100. If the performance increase is substantial, I may hold off on a system upgrade.
BTW- Will the 4850 play older DX8,9 games?
