Upgrade for Geforce Ti4200?

Agreed. If you can find one, a 9500 Pro is good too but getting really tough to find.

9600XT is good too.

Middle of the road seems to be a Radeon 9600Pro at the moment.

Priced under $200, supports DX9. I just bought one a month ago to replace my Ti4200 and went with the Radeon for the DX9 support. Plays Call of Duty just fine (little laggy sometimes but definately playable).

I'd say Geforce FX but it doesn't support DX9, and I've never had one to comment on it anyhow.

you might consider actually looking into the cards before you post something irroneous like that.

The least I would upgrade to is an fx5900 or a radeon 9700. Both can be found for under $200.

Save your money. There shouldn't be much out yet that you can't play on your 4200. You be much much better off getting a gen 2 DX9 part in '04.

Yeah guess I'll have to give that a try next time 😱 I just seem to remember a few threads with people bitching about Nvidia not supporting DX9 and not being able to play Half Life 2. Funny how I can't find any of those threads now 😀

for a nvidia that's noticeably faster than your ti4200 you'll need a fx 5700 ultra at $179+ or 5900 non-ultra at $199+. Stay away from the 5600 Ultra it's not enough of a speed boost to justify the price.

The 5700 is actually a decent DX9 card, much more so than the 5600. Read the review of it on the main Anandtech website and/or by looking at the review links for cards at newegg.com.

Bingo. Except in heavy AA/AF situations, current midrange cards don't even approach 2x the Ti4200's performance in most situations.

dont buy a midrange card, a la 9500, 9600, 5700, blah blah, its not that great increase from a 4200. from a 4200, get high end or just wait it out.

Eh, I'd go the other way around; if you buy something, get a mid-range card. While they offer less performance than a high-end card, unless you can get a high end card for cheap($200 5900's, etc), you're effectively cheating yourself, since new high-end cards will be out before any DX9 games are.

I vote with those recommending that you hold on to that Ti4200 a little longer. I usually play games with a Ti4200. It's now out for RMA and I'm using a 9600Pro atm. While it's a nice card, I don't notice any improvement over my Ti4200. To get any meaningful improvement for the money I think one should wait.

The waiting thing depends on how long you've had your Ti4200 and how long you plan to have your next video card. If you're one to keep cards for a long time, then wait 2-3 months and buy the Radeon 9800Pro then and keep it for a long while. If not, then get it now!

why buy another mid-range card? He's already got one! The geforce 4 ti4200 is really the mid-range value card right now. I suggest you just save some money and go hardcore later next year.

Because when using AA/AF, the performance boost is at least 2x in most cases, if not more. Otherwise you're right, waiting is the other good(if perhaps not best) choice.
