Upgrade for E6600 using 4870x2

What should i upgrade in my system? I know I have major bottlenecks for my 4870x2. Not sure if sure rebuild on an i7 or just upgrade motherboard/CPU and call it a day. Im using this system primarily for gaming 90%.

Currently rig

g965-ds3 motherboard
E6600 @ 3.14ghz
4 gig DDR2 800
4870x2
corsair 520w psu

If you have the money for i7 920 + X58 MB + DDR3 then that would do you well. If not, you could go to the Q9550 on P45 and use the same ram. The Q9550 would probably offer similar performance for a lot less money.

Nehalem runs hot so you would probably have to get a aftermarket cooler. I'd save the money from an i7 build and look into an E0 revision 8400, 8500, or 8600 and get a nice mobo.

Yeah E8500/8400 is good also. I figured he would want a quad since he has a 4870 X2 already. He obviously isn't entirely budget oriented.

Again, I'd recommend an E8600 if you're an avid overclocker as you're guaranteed to get the overclocking-friendly E0 stepping. If you go the E8400 (like a did) or E8500 route you just might get a C0 stepping which suck for overclocking. My C0 E8400 does 3.825GHz but a a ridiculous voltage of 1.45!🙂

Why do you want to upgrade? Games run slow? I'd say as long as you got that C2D running above 3GHz you're fine. Since you do, there's no need to upgrade anything right now, at least I wouldn't.

Well feel like im bottlenecking having a 4870x2 with a PCIe 1.0 motherboard.

Figure upgrading to a newer motherboard will give me an increase in itself and is a relatively cheap upgrade.

Then figured if im upgrading motherboard why don't i just upgrade cpu.

Money is not a big issue if what I get scales with the performance playing the newest games at 1920x1080 with all settings at full.

But maybe your right on upgrading the cpu if I don't see very tangilble gains.

im in a similar boat sort of. I have a similar setup. I opted to go with a gtx260 just because I have a pice 1.0. I felt the same way about getting a gtx280 or a 4870x2 and bottleneck it. Im still contemplating getting a q6600 g0 on ebay and throw it in there just to get 4 cores. I didnt want to do a new mobo/cpu tho :/

Okay decided on getting a q9550 and EP45-UD3P. Do you think I should upgrade my psu? Its currently a 520w corsair. Thinking may need some more juice with my 4870x2 and trying to overclock the cpu. What psu would you recommend?
