ok, so my firend has a first generation p4 dell system.

its got a 1.3ghz p4 and 128mb of 16 bit rdram

i was thinking the cheapest upgrade might be to get a socket 423 to 478 converter and a 2.4a and upgrade the ram by buying i more 128mb rimms (i know they must be installing in pairs)

can anone suggest somthing else?

the mobo is a normal board, it probably could be replaced with a new one

i have to give hime two options with the one i stated above, he could use his hsf he has now with no problems.

second option i was thinking was get a new mobo, like 865, and a 2.8C or a 2.6C (not sure if they make those) and some new ram.

Get a new computer.
Dell might have a cheap deal going, if he wants to stick with pre-made, or it might be better to make a new system based on AMD (for cost-effectiveness) and re-use old parts if possible (like DVD/CD drives/HDD's etc)

Beware the seemingly-normal Dell board. ~ heeeeeeeeed myyyyyyyyy warrrrrrrrrrning!

Depending on what he uses it for and what kind of performance he needs, you might see a lot of benefit simply by upgrading to Win2000Pro or WinXP Pro and dolling it up with an additional 256MB-512MB of RAM and perhaps a very fast IDE drive like a Hitachi 8MB-cache one. Or SCSI! :D

But I'm seconding the motion to simply give that one to mom/dad/sister/uncle and build a new one. AthlonXP on nForce2 is a good value for the dollar. Don't forget the cost of a new OS though.

yeah i know i think i'mna suggest that, he just got a 9800pro and wanted to know if he could upgrade anything else, i would suggest just putting some more ram in it, he plays warcraft 3

he doens't want to have to buy a new case, psu stuff liek that
