Upgrade for 5850?

I have about £100 spare and would like to get an upgrade on the current card.

Years gone by I use to follow the GPU market like a hawk but not anymore.

Can anyone recommend me a card for that price? not fussed on ATI/Nvidia

Thanks

Honestly, unless you're looking for a top of the line solution, my rig with a 5850 in it still plays the latest stuff just fine. Not too familiar with video card prices wherever you are, but the things beating out my 5850 are all ~$300+ 7xxx cards. I love my 7970 but it definitely wasnt cheap when I bought it 🙂

A 7850 will easily beat a 5850, and it cost a lot less than $300.

But since the OP only has 100 to spare, it comes down to what a 5850 sells for. And I doubt it sells for ~100. So even a 7850 may be out of reach.

a used HD 5850 will fetch around £80. spend around £115 and get a Sapphire HD 7870 XT. uses the HD 7870 Tahiti LE chip.

stock performance on par with HD 7950(800 Mhz). overclocked to 1.2 ghz matches HD 7970(925 Mhz) and should be close to 2x HD 5850 perf.

XFX and Powercolor are cheaper but the cooler is not as good as sapphire

I would not go for a 7770. Save up a bit more if need be, but a 2Gb 7850 is what you want. A 7870 if possible.

You could purchase another Radeon HD 5850 for CrossFire but would still be framebuffer limited at 1GB.

You really want to get up to a single Radeon HD 7850 2GB level.
