Upgrade Dilemma - Help me Decide!!

I currently have:

AMD X2 6000
4870
4 GB ram
620 Watt Corsair PSU

I want to upgrade to a better Dual Core or Quad core CPU. What is better to do now, Quad or Dual? I noticed I can max out most games but I am seeing a CPU bottleneck, and newer games seem to be moving towards Quad Core (GTA 4, Alan Wake). Problem also is Core i7 is out, and AMD's new CPUs are coming soon, but I am impatient and don't want to wait. If I go LGA 775, I have no future upgrade path. Is it better to wait, ot go Dual or Quad Now?

I have around 7-800 to spend

Just need a new Mobo and CPU, Maybe a case, but not a necessity.

If you want just a decent i7 mobo, cpu, ram (DDR3 tri channel)be prepared to spend ~1k.

I would (if I were you):

1) Spend ~400 for a C2D and a decent LGA 775 mobo (p45). ($100 on memory if need be)

2)Use the other 400 for when the i7 chipset matures and dd3 isnt insanely priced

Pros: You will have only spent the same amount you would have now but you have 2 systems out of it.

Cons: you dont get to flex your geek muscles.

That's what im doing, except that I am using the money I saved on a i7 for a nice 22" monitor.

Just sit down and think about it you will come to the same conclusion

Save your cash or just do a cheap phenom. I wouldn't do a full overhaul at this point.

Yea all he would need is a new mobo/cpu and he's golden for a while. Everything else he has is good.

In the kind of the same boat as you. I"ve got a 6000+ and kinda of want a quad core for video/dvd authoring tasks. I am going to wait until the Pehnom II CPU's come out in January (it's not that far away!) The Quad core 3.0GHz chip is rumored to be around $340 at launch so I might jump on that and keep the rest of my current system which I am happy with.
