I have a AMD Athlon XP2800 running at 2.08 GHz on an ASUS A7N8 X-E deluxe MB. I think that my CPU is trying to fail. I run mostly flight sim, and want to upgrade my system in about six months. For right now, in case of CPU failure, I would just upgrade my CPU to the fastest that this board would handle. Can anyone tell me how to determine that?

I'm not familiaer with AMD but you can go to the motherboard manufacturer site and find out what the latest cpu support for that board is and that includes a possible BIOS upgrade to the board for it.

These are going to be your best choice: XP-M 2800. It has an unlocked multiplier, so it's very easily overclocked. Of course, you'd get much more performance by spending that $100-120 on a Socket 754 or 939 motherboard and cpu combo.;)

Hmmm A7N8X IIRC that should have 400mhz FSB support as it is an NF2 board so you should be able to run the 3200+ Barton..

easiest way to check is go to Asus's website and have a look at the specs of your board.

it's kind of stupid to upgrade to an obsolete processor that costs $100+ when you can get a faster, 64bit processor WITH motherboard combo for just as much. if not, cheaper.

Sorry about that. Here is my present thinking. I will get an ASUS A8N5X MB and an AMD Athlon 64 3800+. This MB will allow me to eventually upgrade to an Athlon duel core. I hope that I can re-install my present Corsair TwinX 1 GB DDR400 XMS3200, Radeon 9800np 128 DDR and my WD 120 GB SATA hard drive. I would later add another SATA hard drive. Would someone please critique this plan and point out the faults. I am basing this mostly on the fact that MicroSoft FSX does not fully utilize the dual core CPU. (This last from a Micrsoft devloper who works on FSX)
