Upgrade CPU from A64 3200+ to Opteron 165 OR 7800GT SLI's?

Just curious as to which would be more bang for my buck.

All things being equal, would going from an Winchester A64 3200+ to a Opteron 165 (saying neither is OC'ed) OR going from one 7800GT to an SLI 7800GT setup give me more performance? I've purchased both a new Opteron CPU along with another 7800GT, although I'm probably only going to keep one.

As a computer user, I do a lot of games, currently playing AOE3, Doom3, CS:S. I also do a lot of DVD ripping/encoding with DVD shrink, rip MP3's using EAC/LAME, download newsgroups with GrabIT, along with general email, surfing, Quicken, etc.

Any advice?

Unless you're running very high res, sli won't do much for you. A dual core won't give you any boost at all in games right now, though it might in the future. So my vote would be t-bills.

Well, since both an Opteron 165 and a 7800GT are coming it's a matter of which of the two. I'm leaning towards the CPU as I probably wouldn't take as much of a hit when ripping a DVD. I could probably still play CS:S. However...I am running a 24" LCD, so maybe the SLI would help out at high res since I'm running 1600x1200.

A good bind to be in. 🙂

The Opteron will give you a more beneficial performance boost, especially in Audio/Video work. The SLI 7800GT will just allow you to use higher settings like AA/AF. I use SLI'd 7800GT's with a Athlon64 3500+ and i'm definitely CPU limited but I can run games @ 1600x1200 with 4/8xAA & 16xAF.
