Upgrade Asus Maximus extreme X38 , worth it?

In the process of doing a yearly upgrade to my system, currently E6850, 2gb running vista 32, upgrading to a Q9650, 4gb and vista 64, was wondering what kind of boost I would get from getting a current top end MB. Am I shooting myself in the foot with the now year old Maximus? While I have the water cooling and CPU out, figure if I am going to replace anything else, now is the time to do it.

See alot of benchmarks comparing various processors across current MB chipsets, but a lack of generation to next generation benchmarks to show what real (if any) world gains. My threshold is pretty much a 15% or greater boost, otherwise I view it as not very perceptable (at least not worth droppin a couple hundred bucks on a MB).

Any real numbers out there?

This is one of the best X38 board asus was offering. It has a lot of features you can play around in the bios. Especially in OC part. PLUS, ASUS has the most reputable service and technical support, so i think you should consider this one for your next upgrade.

it probably isnt even worth upgrading right now until nehalem hits the etailers anyway, since that will bring down the price on the CPU you want for sure. as for replacing the motherboard, i dont see any need to, beyond the fact that the old hardware is still more than awesome and unless you absolutely NEED the extra performance a quad core will provide, you probably wont even notice going from one to the other, beyond the ram upgrade. if i were going to build a system with what you want i would get a new MB just for the fact that i would probably keep using the entire old system for at least another year or so at LEAST (unless you're selling the old hardware). if you plan on selling the old hardware though, you dont need a new motherboard, straight up plain and simple.

Your motherboard is the ddr 3 version of the Maximus forumla and the only difference between x38 and x48 is binning, its basicly the same chipset so you do have a current gen chipset and there is virturally no performance difference. I would not replace your motherboard
