My current system:
AMD Athlon 1700+
A7N266-E
WD 40GB HDD
ATI 9600 (256MB)
512MB PC2100
Win XP Pro SP1

I have about $100 set aside for an upgrade.... This will be my last upgrade for a while. What would be the best thing to upgrade.
I was thinking about going from the 1700+ (1.47Ghz) to a 2400+ (2.0Ghz)

Some of things I am running that would I want a little extra power for:

Degidesign MBox w/Pro Tools
DOOM 3 (right now runs a little choppy @ Med 800x600)

This Would be a better upgrade, as it would allow you to overclock your current processor, and it is the memory that the Athlon 64's use as well, so should you ever step up later on, you'll be set :)

I'd do the CPU upgrade, personally, or perhaps sell your video card on the forums here and upgrade to a 9600xt. That might help your doom3 performance more than the cpu.

On such a limited budget, the 2400+ would give you the best imporovement. But even that might only give you a slight boost (say 10%) in Doom 3...

A case would be the worst upgrade on a tight budget. His PC looking better doesnt make doom run faster :)

Wait and save up enough to make a decent upgrade...such as the Athlon64 one mentioned.

I was asking what kind of case he had, because believe it or not, people DO sometimes fail to mention they own HP, Dell, or Gateway computers ;)

save the cash for when you'll have more and to do a bigger upgrade. at this point it's hard for me to see how anything you could buy for $100 could have a significant impact on your overall system performance.
