OK, the time has come to rid myself of this POS AMD K6-2 350.
Current setup:
AMD K6-2 350, microstar mobo
192MB RAM (128+64)
1.6GB maxtor (waiting for it to die on me :) )
6.4GB Fujitsu
8GB WD (all drives IDE)
generic yamaha soundcard (will likely get an SBLive!)
and...the second horror, a V2 12MB.

-The video card I will be replacing almost assuredly with an NV20, so going to hold on that.
-For CPU/mobo, what would be the best out there? AMD will be a little cheaper, but are there any compatability issues to worry about like the evil K6 lines? I'm not looking to OC unless there is a very good chance of success (like PIII 700 @ ~900), and not much excess heat (I live in middle GA, on the second floor, with plenty of windows. It gets around 100º in the summer, with AC going full).

That is about it. I figure I'll be able to glean enough info from biased people from both sides in the replies...

The new AMD Athlon and Durons have to compatibility problems like the K6. The K6 really sucked.

Anyways if your on a budget, maybe a Duron 800 with a cheep motherboard (if you don't want to overclock) If your not on a budget go with a 1ghz t-bird and a Abit KT7, Abit KT7-Raid or an Asus A7V.

A budget, yes, but since I have all but the CPU. mobo, and case taken care of (or soon will, swapping parts from one of the other 6 comps in the house), up to about $350-$400 will work, so I'm lookin' at T-birds and PIIIs :)

If heats an issue definatly go intel. or unless AMD put thermal diodes on there newer chips I wouldn't risk it.

P3-800MHz can get up to 1080MHz with an alpha cooler so if you want to push you can. Also the P3-800 is down to $177.

Damn I'm starting to sound like an AMD basher. In my last couple of posts have supported Intel and crapped on AMD.

I love AMD damnit

Aren't AMD MB's more expensive?
So, isn't the best question, what MB/CPU combo is better?

i had the same chip prior to my latest upgrade - k6-2350@450 (2.7 vcore)
and a voodoo banshee - slow as hell...anyway...

I'd have to recommend a thunderbird 900 and microstar k7t pro2A (686B UDMA100 southbridge)
it's cheaper than the abit kt7 and offers exactly the same options....unless u want ide raid.
or, one thing that would sway me to purchase the asus a7v (or a7v pro - without the highpoint udma 100 controller) is its 5 USB ports - yes, it comes w/ FIVE usb ports...and a header for two additions ones.
whcih u can pick up at a lot of place (ie. pccanada.com) for 4 bucks or so....

but if u're not big on usb or have a hub already or whatever else, then i'd suggest the microstar...
one final candidate would be the soyo socket A which offers multiplier adjustments as well and can be
had for pennies....and is a decent performer and quite stable.....i suggested that cpu speed/make because
currently it's the best bang for the buck.

Athlon Classic 700@784
Asus K7M
128MB PC100 generic
Asus V6600 Geforce SDR @ 150vcore, 200mem (det. 6.49)
Diamond MX300 (vortex 2 reference - EAX&A3D!)
Win98SE

The pentium III 700, 750, and 800 all overclock about the same reaching speeds between ~900 and ~1000. The 1080 is probably a rare chip. The limiting factor is the .18 micron die that's why even the stock 1.13 ghz was crapping out.
