Upgrade advice - from 9800Pro to what???

With Far Cry and Doom3, looks like its time for a video card upgrade. No overclcoking or mods to be done. Just standard video card. Looks like its between an X800Pro and some 6800 version. I cant afford the 6800 ultra.

Any suggestions????

I'd go for the 6800 GT. Probably the best bang for your buck considering what you stated (if you can afford it). And if you can get one (in a lot of demand right now), the BFG GT OC's come factory overclocked with a lifetime warranty. Since you aren't overclocking yourself, if you do decide to go the GT route, might as well go for this and get as much speed as you can get. *shrugs* Just my opinion.

Well the 6800 Standard is going to make the least difference of the newer cards (except for Doom). 😉

i'd also suggest the 6800GT as the best bang for buck . . . . or you could even consider eVGA's upgrade program . . . you buy a 6800GT and - within 90 days - have the option to pay the difference and upgrade to an Ultra (i think it also works for the 6800standard to GT).

6800 GT or NU. It is hard to recommend the X800Pro at that price range as it constantly gets beaten by the 6800GT. And you already said that the X800XT and 6800U(E) are out of your price range. So i would say 6800GT first, then in a distant second the X800Pro. THe 6800NU isn't hard to recommend because it is a good price performance ratio, however if you have the money go for the GT, if you absolutely dont want a GT then the X800Pro, but GT first.

I'd say anything less than a 6800GT or maybe x800 Pro and you won't be happy with the increase in performance for your $400.

I'd actually wait for HL2 to ship, and be reviewed, before making any rash decisions. The 9800Pro still plays Doom 3 like a champ, so you've nothing much to worry about for all current games at least. Why not wait for prices to drop and HL2 to ship?
