Eh, the performance difference isn't that great at the moment between your 7870LE and the top end. I would wait until the 390X comes out.

That's not going to be even remotely close to his price range.

The reason I ask is because I could probably score a 970 for about $260 right about now. Special order at the kiosk, price match, use coupon (if it works out, of course, but I have a friendly manager at a Staples here). Worth the extra $30 or so?

I would do it since you also get TW3 coupon with it. Otherwise Sapphire Tri-X 290 for $240 is a great deal.

That's the problem (or benefit depending on how patient you are) to the top AMD cards.

I remember PCS+ 290 for $200 on Newegg around Black Friday. More than 4 months passed but most 290s are still going for $240. It seems Q1 is often not a great time to get a deal on a GPU, although I did score a 6950 around Feb 2011 for $230 from its November 2011 launch price of $229, and around that time GTX570 was going for $350. So once in a while it's possible to get good deals in Q1, early Q2.

I still cant' believe you can get a r9 290 tri-x for 240$. I remember in the mining days, those things were 500-650$, depending on where you were looking, and nearly always out of stock! Not a bad price to pay for a brand new card with ~gtx 970 performance

After much mucking about with the 290 and a 970 (during which I came to find out that Newegg's customer service isn't all it's cracked up to be but can be cajoled, bribed and threatened into finally doing the right thing), I finally settled on this card for around $270 after a rebate card (plus, it included the one bundled game I actually wanted for once - Dirt Rally). not including various concessions. Pretty happy, except I still get weird photo editing artifacts (which seem to be an AMD thing with Windows 7) in Microsoft's basic photo editor. Ended up going with AMD because of FreeSync with the Acer XG270HU.

I will - but the artifacts happened with my original 7870, as well. Will try DDU, though, to make sure.
