I would like to upgrade my current system which I used mainly to encode Wav files to MP3 Pro and AVI to DVD.
A two hour Wav file takes around 3 to 5 minutes to convert and while converting I cannot even browse properly.
My Current system is
Pentium 4 2.53 Ghz Socket 478
Gigabyte MB 667U2 845 chipset
512 mb RAM DDR PC 2700
ATA Hdd Seagate 120 GB
ATI Radeon 9000 Pro with 128 MB Ram

My question is will upgrading to AMD64 3500+ Venice and 1GB ram and a SATA drive reduce my encoding times?

I need to encode around 2000 files of university lectures I first extract those from DVDs so that also needs performance.
Also I have never used an AMD before in my life so now I am tempted to try out a AMD !!!
But here I read that AMD is good for gaming and Pentium is good for Encoding
Please help I am a newbie and my system is not that super
Thanking you
