Upgrade 8800GT to GTX 460?

My machine is a few years old and I'm looking to upgrade, probably the video card.

Right now I've got a

BFG 8800GT
Q6600 - NOT overclocked, but willing to try it
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
I don't even remember what the motherboard is but I believe it's an asus? Whatever model was popular in the Q6600 days. maybe gigabyte DS3L? idk
corsair 550vx

Recently added an SSD to boot windows, and I'm happy with the computer and the only thing I can see that can use an upgrade is a new video card.

Found the gtx 460 in the system builder's thread and the anandtech review was very solid. I'm looking at this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127551

$180 and then a $20 MIR, not bad. Would this be a solid upgrade? Would run well with my current setup?

Forgot to mention monitor, Samsung P2350 and obviously would like to run things in optimal resolution

edit again: well seems like there are a bunch of 460's to consider, so suggestions on that would be appreciated as well. maybe a different card all together? I'd like to spend $200 max, lower would be fine 🙂

A GTX 460 is approximately twice as fast as your 8800GT, plus it supports DX11 and should run cooler.

If you can find them for $90, I say get 2 of them for SLI.
 
I just did that exact same swap...but that my 8800 was factory overclocked. Used it in my OC Quad 6600 until I built this i7 computer, then I put the card in this computer. It ran great.

Last month or so, I replaced the 8800 with an EVGA GTX 460. I really didn't see what I was expecting. Sure, 3D games run better, but in regular Windows use, the 460 scrolls pages in stages. It does not scroll from top to bottom of a web page or PDF file in one step like the old card does. For some reason it scrolls in stages, like a third-page at a time.

I don't know about other brands, but my EVGA 460 also felt like a cheap plastic replacement for the old card. The 8800 had a tin or aluminum case around the fan & such while the new card is all plastic and not even all that well fitting.

But it works and I have had no issues, other than the pausing while scrolling.
 
For anyone interested, I decided to sleep on it for a few days. Just purchased a XFX 6870 black edition for $183 AR from tiger direct. Might be silly, but if I don't have to mess with OCing, that's fine with me
