Upgradability Question for Potential New Rig

Hey all,
I'm one of those unfortunates who cashed in on an expensive socket 940 system about three years ago. I'm thinking of building a new rig because this one is starting to crap out on me. I have a few options as of now.
1. Go for a super cheap 939 system and wait to see how the new AMD / Intel chips fare.
2. Go for a conroe system.

I was thinking Conroe, but I'm not sure whether it's better or not to wait to see how AMDs updated chips do in Q1 2007.

I'm basically paranoid about these new quad core solutions on the horizon. I don't want to build a system and then have a motherboard that's almost immediately useless for upgrading.
If I do a full system upgrade, my budget is around $1200.
I've also never built my own computer before, but I'm willing to do my research and build it smartly.

By the way, i've got 1 gb PC3200 ECC RAM, can I use it in a 939 system?
Also, regardless of what I end up buying, the three parts I know I'll be using are an Antec P180, Antec Trio 650 and Audigy 2 ZS.

Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks.

I would only go with that Ram if you are not planning to overclock at all. Otherwise stay away

If you got the money and the will, I would go for the conroe, the 939 is getting old fast, plus DDR memory is going up...

I would go for a C2D system, but if you have some time wait until after the holidays when memory prices become more reasonable.

If you are planning to get a quadcore, the 939 option might be good, just because it is a temporary system only for a few months... but I'm not sure what you would need the quad core for.... that is so much performance... unneeded if you're doing everyday things. or light gaming
