I currently have a 9800 Pro (AGP) in an EPOX 9NDA3J mother with Athlon 64 3000+. For business reasons I need to upgrade my video card to a Geforce 6800GT or higher. Should I buy the AGP version or should I buy a new PCI-E motherboard and video card?

An nforce 4 motherboard equivalent to what I have now would only cost about $80 which would put me in good position for later upgrades. But that's 80$ less dollars that I have for the video card.

Waiting for socket M2 is not an option as that would require an additional CPU upgrade.

Depending on how my part time job goes I will have between $200 and $300 to spend on this project.

If you are happy w/your current systems performance (not video card related) then there is no reason not to just go with a slightly cheaper "high end" card like the 6800GT in AGP. If you are wanting an upgrade soon anyways, perhaps getting a PCI-E board and matching graphics card would be the best way, as it really does help your upgrade path.

Since you already have the A64, all you need is a inexpensive pci-e mobo and a pci-e card. If the 6800gt was available for ~$200, it would make sence to upgrade just the card, but those still go for ~$280, and you could get a much faster pci-e 7800gt for that money.
