I was contemplating upgrading from my current card, an original Radeon 32mb DDR card, to the Visiontek Xtasy 6564, a GF3Ti200 64mb DDR card.

Do you think it's worth it? Will I notice a substantial performance improvement? I can get the Visiontek for about $90, which seems like a steal to me, but it's not a steal if I don't notice considerable improvement over my current card.

Thanks.

Unless you are limited by the rest of your system (what is it?), you will see a significant increase in performance. $90 is a steal.

You'll see a difference. I went from a Radeon 64 DDR to a GF3 on a PIII 1G and saw a nice improvement.

I'm also upgrading from a Radeon 32M DDR (LE) to the VisionTek 6565 for $90 after MIR, as I've gotten in on the rebate with a purchase at uBid.

My base system is a P3-700E. However, planning on upgrading to an Athlon XP system in a few months.

But, I may have to do that sooner; I see the GF3 requires an AGP 2.0 compliant slot, which I'm not sure is supplied in my trusty old motherboard, an Abit BX6 rev 2. I've found at least two reports of people using GF3s (one a Ti200) in a BX6r2, but we'll see when I get the card. For $90 I just couldn't pass this up!

(It was like when I bought the LE last year for $77 -- just couldn't pass that up, either!)

Gf3 will work just fine in a BX mobo.
Ok, I'll hold out hope. Powerstrip definitely tells me that the Abit BX6 Rev2 has only an AGP 1.0 slot.

I'll trust what you say, oldfart, as it was from your postings that I decided to buy the Radeon LE. It's been an incredible board, for the price I paid for i!

Jeez...dont trust me!! Now you have me doubting myself. I'm sure I've seen people with BX chipsets and GF3 cards...haven't I?? I have never heard of anyone having problems. GF2 cards also say they need an AGP 2.0 compliant slot and they work in BX's, that is for sure.

I have put a couple of Geforce 2 cards on a BX board. It works fine, but is seems a little choppy at times, definately smooths out and picks up performance on a board that supports a true 4X AGP. I know, everybody claims that benchmark wise 2x vs 4x is not a big deal, but in the real gaming world you can see the difference.

I just did this exact upgrade. It's great.

That board does have just an AGP 1.0 slot, but like others have said, there are people running them on it, so I guess it works.

You'll see a significant speed increase without breaking the bank. Go for it.

I had a PIII-700E and went from a GeForce2mx-400 64meg to a GeForce3 Ti200 (VisionTek), and while it did improve some, it wasn't hugely noticable. Very much CPU limited.

So, I figured I needed to upgrade my CPU. Jumped on the 1.6A bandwagon, and now I'm a happy camper. 1.6A, P4B266, generic DDR running at 2.4Ghz, the VisionTek runs at 220/500 (limit of coolbits), and I got 8033 3DMarks.

It also makes defending the objective that much more fun.

Digging around, I've found other people who have a GF3 Ti200 in my exact motherboard, so I'm not trusting just you. Here are two postings to alt.comp.periphs.mainboard.abit reporting success.

Worse comes to worse, if I end up with a GF3 I can't use with my good old P3-700E system, I'll have to suffer with the consequences and buy a new MB and XP1800+. ;)
