Well I guess it had to happen sooner or later. My brand new Accord got hit parked in the street...looks like it was a head on. Front plstic bumper is ruined and the hood is slightly dented in. SHould I tell my insurance carrier or will they just jack up my rates. I'm guessing about $1200 damage and I have a $500 deductable.

Update! My wife went out and found the car that hit mine! It was parked a quarter mile up the street. However it was in a really bad area and she said there were a bunch of scummy guys standing around outside right near it. So she didn't even stop to get the plates. Is it even worth it for me to turn them in??? They know where I live and what my car looks like. If they go to jail I may be in deep $hit.

Get an estimate before you decide that.

There may be more than visible damage, could easily turn 1200 into 3000.

Anyways, from what I hear ins. companies won't raise your rates on a hit and run/vandalism on the first time you make a claim for it.

It depends on your insurance company. If you've been with them for awhile, they will probably just pay for it and no rate hike. If you jump around looking for the lowest rate, then they'll probably jack you up. I would report it and get it fixed professionally and completely. It sounds like a new car, so I would have it done right and spare no expense.

that's phucked up.
I'd make a police report and have the insurance take care of it.
Maybe you should change your policy to Zero Deductible before you file the claim, so you have no money out of the pocket.

People are just plain selfish bastards. Oh, I hot that car, oh well, insurance will pay for it! No, insurance will pay for it and you'll have to pay increased rates. But a hit and run shouldn't be your fault. Right?

Well that doesn't exactly sound honest.

well you're paying insurance, and when you change to no deductible, your rates are gonna go up.
Why have an out of pocket expense when they'll bill you later ?

Hopefully, the first call that you make will be to the local police so they can fill a report out and look for the person who hit your car.

Our family had a hit and run by a snowplow on our mini van. The cops didn't give a flying fock whether it was hit or not.
I guess they were busy downing donuts. They just said come down, file a report then file insurance.

Finding the person that hit the car is near impossible.

That's why I have a few cameras installed outside my house :)

Well I just got off the phone with Geico and they said that there would be no change in my rate. I guess I'm happy about that. So I'm just out $500 and of course my now non-virginal car. I just pray that there is no engine damage.

BTW, my airbags did not deploy. WTF is up with that? Front bumper is completely destroyed and the hood is dented and no airbags? Is that supposed to happen if the car is off?

My Supra got hit like that 2 years ago and lost antifreeze thereafter. I found out 6 months later that the head was cracked and the gasket blown. There is no way I am keeping a car after an accident like this. Fortunately I start making big bucks in 6 months so I'll trade it in for a TSX or TL by then or shortly thereafter. Such a waste.

People suck.. Someone on my buddy list has this in her away msg:

I M P O R T A N T
if you or someone you know drives a silver/gold/champagne-ish colored Z71 or similarly unnecessarily large truck and thinks that totalling multiple parked cars on nueces then swerving off cheering is a cool way to spend a saturday night - or if you see a truck fitting that description plus some serious damage (especially to the cattle guard), call the cops and/or kick that coward's ass.
THANKS.

This is probably just one more reason insurance rates are higher in the city than the suburbs. Since you're already being penalized, they shouldn't jack the rates up even more... you hope!

When I got my car's hood and headlights fixed after my accident, if he had done a perfect job as if I had gone through insurance it would have been $2500. But since I wasnt going through insurance and my car is somewhat old anyway, he did the job for about $1000. The car isnt perfect but it looks fine. That just shows how quickly $1000 or 1200 can turn into 2500 or 3000.

Someone did that to my truck except from the rear, I claimed it and my rates didn't go up at all.

Unless you make many claims, your rates typically don't go up.

The people spewing the bs that your rates will automatically go up, have probably never filed a claim in their life.
