I downloaded and successfully installed SP2. Then I successfully installed SP3. Thanks for the help!

And in case anyone was wondering, ATI Catalyst requires .NET. At this rate, I am not going to get this PC up to full speed for weeks. (I can only download stuff on weekends, and have to burn a CD and bring it to the apartment)

On the other hand, I got Red Alert 2 working, so that should keep me busy for awhile. 🙂

I have a PC located in a new apartment without internet. I installed WinXP Pro (32-bit). Yeah, I know I'll have to activate it, but I'm hoping to have internet access soon.

I went to MS's site and found this

Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers

Overview

Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) includes all previously released updates for the operating system. This update also includes a small number of new functionalities, which do not significantly change customers’ experience with the operating system.
If you're updating just one computer, please visit Windows Update at http://update.microsoft.com.

I downloaded this at home, then tried to run this on the new PC. It stated that I needed at least Service Pack 1 installed first.

WTF?

Now I cannot figure out where to download SP1 from. All the Microsoft website links don't work or lead to a 2 MB downloader. Help?

Thanks for making this such a pain in the ass, Microsoft!

Microsoft took SP1 off their website, and SP1a is only available as a web install. You should be able to install SP2, which you can then upgrade to SP3.

However, because your copy of SP3 is so old, I'd suggest slipstreaming SP2 and then SP3 into the install media and re-installing so you don't end up with a bunch of legacy cruft.

If you google, you can find downloads of SP2.

The only real reason you need to slipstream a copy of XP is if you are trying to install on a large hard drive. Since you already got XP installed and working, I recommend you download SP2, install it, then install SP3. When you connect to the Internet, it will find a bunch of updates and install those.

Interesting. It always used to be true in the past that SPs were cumulative, and you only had to install the newest one. Guess MS changed that policy?

Thanks for the help, everyone. I downloaded SP2 and burned it to a CD. I'll try installing that tonight.

By the way, in case anyone was wondering, ATI Catalyst won't load without a Service Pack.

And people bitch about Linux being so difficult...

By the way, in case anyone was wondering, ATI Catalyst won't load without a Service Pack.

The driver alone might work, but the control center crap requires .Net which is probably what requires the SPs to be preinstalled.

Windows XP RTM is almost 9 years old. I'm pretty sure that updating a Linux distro that old would also involve jumping through a few hoops.

If you just installed it clean and tried to bring it up to the last updated version of that release it wouldn't require any hoops as Linux package managers are smart enough to only install the latest available version of a package in a repo.
