Updating to iOS5 After Being Jailbroken

After having a jailbroken iPhone for a good while now I think I'm going to just go with iOS5 since it is adding what I thought iOS4.x was missing.

Is it safe to just run the update via iTunes?

Sort of.

You need to download the IPSW file. Go to your device page, hold shift (on a Windows machine, I think it's Cmd on an OSX machine) and click Restore. This will allow you to select a IPSW to write to your phone.

Beware that this will erase everything off your phone and you will have to restore to a backup. This takes awhile too if you have a lot of apps. I'll probably do this with 4.3.5 to facilitate an easier upgrade to 5. Jailbreaking my phone is pretty useless now that AT&T is cracking down on the evil tethering.

EDIT:

I'm considering removing the jailbreak from my iPad 2 as well. I like having XBMC, but given how rarely I use it... I may just try and work out a transcoding DLNA setup on my server.

Trying to decide if I want to do this as well. Only thing I'd really miss at this point is the activator app to set key functions (double tap sleep for flashlight) and more importanly the tether me app. I'm tethering my iPad to my phone on Verizon. Really don't want to lose that.

Yep. Run it through iTunes under "Restore".

Best if you hold down Power + Home and release Power after 10 seconds while the phone is plugged in.

But note that if you jailbreak to have quick access to brightness and other things, I don't doubt that you will miss those features. Sorely.

But knowing our luck, Apple likely would leave a security hole somewhere and jailbreak will be back after a bit.

The only thing I really jailbreak for is the notifications, but Apple has finally addressed that. So I need to restore to 4.2 or can I just download the IPSW and restore directly to 5?
