I'm not making this thread to speak about jailbreaking/hacking the ps3.

I've been playing 2k11 on my ps3 up until today. My ps3 is version 3.55, i dont really care for the update rosters and etc. I didn't want to update because i've just heard sony is adding more and more secret updates to block this and that from being played.

I just got 2k12 and i cant play it because it wants me to update my ps3 to 3.7 or something. Is there a way around this? I dont care about updated rosters, i dont care about online game play. I just want to play the game.

Reason being, ive seen a lot of people have issues watching .avi files. The video or audio will cut on in 20 minutes during a movie. I might want to look into hacking it down the road, since my ps1 and ps2 were both modded. Ultimately is there a way for me to play w/o updating ?

I'm sitting here thinking, what about the people who DONT have internet and own a ps3. How would they play? If i'm forced to update to play this game, would xbox be the same deal? I bought my ps3 for the 2k series and movies.

What if you just disable the internet connection?

Will the system still tell you you have to update to 3.7 or whatever?

Just do it, it doesn't break anything. Isn't PS3 on 4.X now? What's wrong w/ updating? Did you buy your games? Or are you pirating and don't want to update b/c it will stop you from playing those pirated games?

I think the game is telling you that the minimum version the game will play on is 3.7. This is probably because the game was only tested on 3.7 and above (we're on 4.0 now). So if the game disc itself is telling your ps3 it needs to be 3.7 and higher, disabling the internet isn't going to do anything for you. The disabling the internet trick is only a way of avoiding the 2k12 individual update that the ps3 would check for when starting up the game.

Without updating, I think this will continue to be a problem for you as you play newer and newer games. I haven't seen or heard of the .avi issues you are talking about, so I don't see any reason you shouldn't update your ps3 unless you are doing something involving pirating games.

I haven't looked into ps3 jailbreaking/modding mainly because I think its still iffy. I do know most mod methods are 3.55 or lower. Most the people whom i googled just say get buy a 2nd ps3. One legit one and one modded.

I guess really there is no way to bypass this update. Somewhat forced to update to play...

You can download the update on a PC and copy it to a USB drive, the PlayStation website says how.

Also, if you watch blu-ray you've missed updates that might improve playback of newer titles.

If you have Netflix, you've missed out on the excellent streaming including HD and 5.1 sound for some titles.

its not that i cant download the update.

Its more of me not wanting to. Yes while there are improvements, there are also more crack down on the pirated stuff as well. I dont netflix, my ps3 is just used to play 2-3 games and as a media player via USB drive.

I know updating will stop some of my media player stuff. Copyright laws will either kick in and block you out completely near the 20 minute mark of the movie or lock out the sound completely. We tested this out with my ps3 and another friends on the exact same files.

How true is this? Anyone know?

Sounds like something made up. But I don't know for sure.

Just update your PS3 unless you are worried your cracked games or files won't work anymore.

Sucks that it would cut down on pirating. Damn sony.

Games normally come with the firmware update they require to play on the disc itself. That's probably why you're being prompted to update to 3.7. rather than the current 4.0.

As for movies not working after 20 minutes because of "copyright laws", I agree with Schfifty Five that this sounds like something made up. DRM protected files are an all or nothing deal, either PlayStation 3 will play the file in its entirety or it won't play it at all. The PS3 can detect Cinavia watermarked files, but that should stop the video playing after a only few seconds and has been part of the firmware since 3.41. Otherwise the PS3 can't tell a pirated movie from a home movie. If there's any truth to this then it's because of some bug or incompability, not copyright protection.

I've gotten the Cinavia alert much longer into playback than a few seconds(like a few minutes maybe), but I cannot remember it ever being as long as 20 mins into a title.

It sounds like your desire to pirate movies is in conflict with your desire to play games.

You could get some media player box for your piracy and just use the PS3 for games, or get a Netflix sub and give up the yarr matey life.

The audio block is Cinavia and there's a ongoing list of movies protected by it on the Wikipedia article about it. Just change the time on your system forward an hour when it happens. It's aac3 specific.

I don't condone pirating movies but backing up is a different story.

You have to make a choice and it's 1: update and play games and be legit. 2: don't update and don't play new games. 3: buy a second ps3 and use that one to play newer games.
