Updating system

As much as I would like to pursue a 64 system, cash at this time says no - and prob won't for a while.

So here goes:

Want to get more bang for what I got. Looking at MBs. Ive built a bunch of systems utilizing Shuttle's AN35N Ultra - I think it's a great board, but I'm looking for a little more, perhaps the ABIT AN7 or the NF7-S. Any preferences or comments appreciated.

Memory: Want to go to a gig, but the idea of dropping 270 - 300 on a gig of 3500 kind of makes the stomach churn. If I got 2 sticks of 256 now, would I still be able to run in dual channel mode if I decided to add a 512 stick later? Or would I be asking for trouble?

Would like to get a 2600 mobile later, but I know that I'd be able to OC my 2400 in the mean time.

I want to stretch what I have at least for another 18 mo. before I need to do a MAJOR $$$ upgrade/new system.

EDIT: Found answer on dual channel question. yes

an35n ultra 😀 ..or for a little more $ get the nf7s.. you might wish to check the HotDeals forum for the Kingston ram deal @ CC for $50 after MIRs...I'm running the pc2700 512MB x 2. Had ran it for 24 hrs at pc3200 but running a retail AMD hsf..so ratcheted back down to 166mhz ..to cheap at the moment to buy a higher performing hsf. I'm comfortable with a 2500+ @ XP3000+ speed. Also the TBSC goes well with the an35n ultra as well. 🙂

If you will be using your existing PC2100 ram, you will be limited in the performance improvement. Recommend you go with some PC3200 and get to 200mhz fsb. A new motherboard while staying with PC2100 might not get the boost you think.

The memory update is a given. Going to get at the same time as the mb. Wasn't planning on staying with my PC2100, but might have to stick with my 2400XP for while longer.
