265 shipped
Athlon 64 3700+ (version with 1mb cache instead of 512) w/ Zalman heatsink
2GB PC3200 (2x 1GB sticks) ULTRA Brand matched kit
Biostar NF4 motherboard with PCI-X 16
XFX Geforce 7900GT 256mb PCI-Express card

Would this setup be a wise investment to bring me up to date for current games?

Generally speaking, yes. But it depends on what game settings you insist on and what monitor resolution you game with.

yep and if you dropped a dual core in it, it would help with newer games coming out. Don't expect to max any of the newer games(Bioshock,Crysis, ect) coming though. You might get away with medium settings with a decent resolution(1280x1024) but you will probably get slowdowns here and there.
