I recently got a Garmin nuvi 660 off of newegg.

I also got the 2010 map update as well. It seems when i open up mapsource or mapinstall i only have 400 megs of memory free on the nav- not enough to update the entire US mapset. is there a way to overwrite the preloaded maps on the system, or do i need to buy a SD card and leave it in the nav if i want to use updated mapsets?

Connect the unit via USB to your computer, then run the map updater. It'll overwrite your current maps. Also install the Garmin WebUpdate program to get the latest firmware for the unit.

You can delete your old gmapprom.img first.

so if i do that, will mapinstall show that i have enough freespace for the updated mapset? how do i delete the img file? i am assuming that the nuvi shows up as a standard USB storage device (i have not checked this yet)

As far as I remember (it was a year ago now :p), the map installer (the big file you just downloaded) just replaced the old maps. It shouldn't be complaining about free space unless you've added a lot of things to your internal memory. It does just show up as a device in My Computer when you plug it in - it'll be the one called "NUVI". You can open it up and mess around with the files all you want after that.
