I have a jailbroken iPhone 2G running 1.1.4 on Tmobile. I have put off updating it because I heard 2.0/1 weren't all that great.

With 2.2 out now, it appears I am getting way behind on updates and may have trouble updating to future versions.

Can I update the firmware to 2.2 and still use it on Tmobile when it's all said an done?

Can contacts, emails, pics be backed up and restored some how in the end so I don't lose anything?

Is it worth going to 2.2 if you were running 1.1.4?

And how do I do it? :)

I have both a Mac & PC so either device can be used to run the updates.

Yes. Yes. Yes.

As for how to do it, update the device normally; the updater should find the latest 2.xx firmware and take care of it for you. It will take a bit of time however, as a 1.xx->2.xx update requires a complete backup/delete/restore of all of the phone's contents.

After you're up to 2.2, you can use QuickPWN to jailbreak and unlock the phone.

Thanks ViRGE.

Okay so I backedup my iPhone at work on my Mac and I sync all the contacts and the calendar, so that's done.

When you say, update the device normally, I have no idea what that means. I have never updated the device normally. When I got the phone my roommate unlocked it and then later I used that same software to get to 1.1.4. I was always told never to update via iTunes.

Unfortunately I don't recall the package used to unlock & jailbreak originally, but it was a nice little program one could download and the process would automate itself. I think I also used 'Anysim' but I could be wrong.

Is the next set to let iTunes update and relock/jail the phone? I assume this will not destroy my Tmo sim card?

Correct. Let iTunes update the phone and relock it. Your SIM card will be fine.

Phone is updated to 2.2, but sim is locked... QuickPwn did not unlock it. Crud.
