Updating Intel Raid Drivers affect my existing Raid?

Hey,

So yesterday I bought a Vertex 100GB LE SSD, and 2 1.5TB WD's Greens. Currently beforehand I had 2 1 TB's (in Raid 0 as my operating system, created using Intel Storage Matrix), and another 1.5 TB Green.

What i want to do is make the SSD my operating system hard drive, keep the co-existing 2*1TB Raid 0 (format after backing up to remove original Windows Install), and have a RAID 5 3x1.5TB. I have everything backed up to the Raid 0 currently.

So question is, when I install Windows 7 onto my SSD, and install the latest raid drivers (Intels Rapid Storage) during installation, will I be able to see my old RAID 0, and will this reset my current RAID 0, as I can't afford this until I create the RAID 5 and transfer onto there?

Thank you for your time.

Updating the driver won't degrade the array. However, hopfully you have an actual backup set that's not part of your described setup. Both RAID 0 and 5 are delayed garbage cans, and you will eventually loose all the data on them- especially with the Intel Storage Matrix. You should consider using RAID 1 or 10. I just switched from 10 to 1, and so far the RAID 1 array feels slower, but I'll give it another week at least before I switch back.

here's what you can do.

SSD: OS
1tb x 2 - Raid 0 storage and apps (read up on SSD's and programs and where they go)
1.5x3 - Raid 5 (look up wikipedia)

its the way to go and any user would tell you this. IMO i'd get rid of those 1.5tb's and just stick to 1tb'sx4. less platters
