Updating gpu drivers?

Do you guys keep your gpu drivers up to date? I have never really done this unless i felt like my card was under performing in some way. I currently have cata 12.1 installed for my 6870 and other than some weird texture pop in on the trees in tribes ascend I haven't had any issues.

Yeah, I usually do. I suppose it's not essential, but seeing as how things usually get fixed and rarely broken, it's a good tradeoff.

I dont. I usually find whatever is a nice stable working driver package and keep it until some random time in the future... The only times I upgrade often is if there may be a new game out and the drivers fix issues or improve performance in that game. Past that, only when I have problems.

PS: I also currently run 12.1 cats for my 5770(why, is there newer out? lol).

I was always into updating nvidia drivers,with amd drivers its been a hit and miss as far as support goes,especially for my 7970.

Before 12.3,only driver that seemed to work was rc11 but i think i could look forward to updating these drivers,but haven't had any issues so far with 12.3,so i think i am set for a little while :biggrin:

12.3 was the first whql driver to support the 7xxx series.

I keep my drivers up to date most of the time mostly due to what Virge said. I usually wait a few days in case there is any flaw in the driver that causes major problems to be discovered(like Nvidia's 'oops' with the 590 driver).

Yup,i waited a while too,hell i was actually pretty persistent on uninstalling rc11,and going with 12.3 for a little while there cause 12.2 i had issues the very moment i installed them and went into a game,it kept downclocking my core clock,then it wouldn't wake up from sleep mode forcing me to do a hard reboot.:|

Damn glad these work too cause rocking release drivers 3 months later is pretty sad,i am sure anyone else would agree with me.

I have a Geforce. Up to date drivers are plain bad, lately. Old drivers let me pick and choose what should be broken .

My general approach, when I ran crossfire it was essential to stay on top of the game, but now I'm back to a single card, I'm only going to update them if I experience a specific problem or if I read about games getting massive frame rate improvements from driver tweaks, which is rare.

If you can do with +10C warmth at idle and load, the best drivers would probably be 12.4 Beta.

On my main rig, each month I have been downloading the new drivers, uninstalling the old drivers, rebooting, and installing the new ones.

But, on a spare/server rig, I got the desktop notification from the catalyst control center that there is a new update available, so instead of ignoring that and doing the above steps, I just clicked the button to have AMD do the update for me. It did the whole thing and was very easy. I may just do that in the future on my main rig, since it's so easy and not a bother at all, and I don't think it's necessary to go through all the cumbersome steps since it's not like I'm switching between AMD/Nvidia each time.

I have an addiction to updating whatever software I have on my computer to the latest version. I am currently trying to break myself of that habit if the software works as advertised on the current version. I used to have the same problem with my hardware, but I broke myself from that addiction with my current rig.
