Updating from windows 8 to 8.1

Hi guys,

On my pc I am the Administrator with full control of pc but am unable to update from 8 to 8.1 as it says you need tp have an accont with Administrative privilages to inistall windows 8.1.

Please can anyine assist me here as it's quite frustrating?

I'm not able to select to run as Administrator, it's in windows 8 apps

id make a new user thats a local admin and try doing it from that account. i havent run into any such issues with 8.1 updates yet, though, so im not sure what else could be going on. this your personal pc i guess?

Is your computer a member of a domain? If so I've found that you have to log in as a domain admin to run the install.

Otherwise try creating a new admin account and run the install from there.

I'm not sure how I set up a new account that's a local admin.

Are you logging in as the administrator account?

Hit windows key + x to bring up the menu then p for the control panel. From there go into the user accounts section and setup a new account and add them to the admin group. See if that works.

If you need more help on it I can look up a guide for adding user accounts when I get back to my computer.

Thank you for your assistance so far. I've followed you instructions up to "User Accounts" but am unable to see the ADD option.

Ok I think this should work for you. This is the new way for windows 8. And you'll want a local account.

Then follow this one to make that account an administrator.

See if all that works. All else fails at least make sure your account has admin rights and see if there are any pending updates before running the 8.1 upgrade.

Thank you but when I type in user I do not see the "Add, delete..." option.

Now I used to be good at searching, analysing and resolving issues but I keep hitting brick walls each step of the way in Windows 8.

How did you install Win8? The first account you create should be an administrator account. Without an admin account, you can't create a new one.

Can you see a list of accounts and their roles?

It is a brand new laptop so W8 was installed when first turning it on.
I contacted Dell support and they removed an update, which caused the issue to upgrade to 8.1, so now sorted.
