Well a few weeks ago I grabbed some dvd+r by maxtor off the shelf and they all worked fine 8x.
Went back in and wasn't really paying attention as I have been pretty lucky on burning so far and ended up with maxtor dvd-r 16x and they refuse to burn for me.

So started searching around..two things I found are:
1: maxtor disks have a poor track record and.
2: It may help to update my firmware, although I found an awful lot of posts of people who tried and screwed up thier drives.

I have an NEC DVD_RW ND2500A and its set to master.
firmware version 1.06

Looking on NEC site I found 2500A with FW 1.0
Other places mention a 1.07 but didn't find one
And some places had a 1.09 or 1.09A but reviews by one or two said links were dead.

It doesn't seem that flashing dvd firmware is quite as dependable as flashing your bios?
as far as telling which one you need and if it will actually work...etc
would it be better off to just stay with 8x dvd-r and not worry about the firmware?

Or pick up a new drive. If you bought 100 discs, for example, they might be worth just as much money as a brand-new 16x burner.

Worst-case scenario, the burner dies on the operating table and then you have the perfect justification for buying a new one. "See, honey, it died and so I had to buy this new BenQ 1655DW :( or else the DVD discs would go to waste!"

It could be the media and flashing your drive may not fix the issue. Did you read up on what the new firmware should do for the drive?

I have seen strange things with DVD discs. I've seen my Ritek 4x discs get picked up and write at 8x fine, while my BenQ 8x discs may be picked up fine at 8x and then even on the same spindle some discs will not be picked up at anything faster than 4x. It has alot to do with the quality of the media.

Well, thought of a third option....Take them back.
Already opened and no reciept but Wally World took them back anyway.
8x are burning fine now:)
