Updating DDO Beta issue

I am patching up the beta of Dungeons and Dragons online and there are over 4000 items to update for some reason. Its taking a long time, but when I run other things like Opera at the same time progress goes along quite quickly. But when I leave it at the desktop progress seems to crawl, with several minutes between each file. Can anyone clue me in to how to get this to go faster or why it seems to be faster when I am multi tasking? Thanks.
