Updates on the Hike for Diabetes: We have received gear from GoLite designs and Oh Boy! Oberto recently, and hope to be receiving more food donations in the near future. Next week we will commence the boxing of our shipments and start mailing stuff off to the drops. In the meantime, here's a small article on the Hike for Diabetes:

----------

April marks the beginning of a body-draining trek for three young men as they finalize the last minute details before embarking on a 2,653-mile cross-country journey.

Completing the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) became a realistic goal for Corey Lindsay, Rob Cole and Russell Benefield one year ago. Beginning April 22 in Campo, Mexico, they?ll hike north for four months to Manning Park, British Columbia. Putting their minds together, the young men organized a charity that benefits the American Diabetes Association.

?It?s my goal to dispel the rumors about diabetes,? said Cole, ?I?ve been an insulin-dependent diabetic for five years, and I was afraid when I was first diagnosed that it would limit my life. I want to show people that anything is possible, if you want it badly enough.?

With the help of Laura Thelander at the Northwest Chapter of the ADA, the boys were able to contact many companies asking for assistance with food, gear and other necessary hiking supplies. The companies not only benefit by assisting the ADA, but their products will be noted and ?tested? along the hike through various postings via website and newspaper articles. With six weeks left to go, the trio has gathered sponsors such as Montrail, GoLite Designs, GVP Gear, Oh Boy! Oberto and Clif Bar. Though many of their gear requirements have been met, they still need assistance with food. With a schedule encompassing approximately 25 miles of hiking per day, the caloric requirements of hiking the Pacific Crest Trail are quite high (around 5000 calories per person daily). Despite the stringent requirements ahead of them, these three friends are dedicated to achieving their goal.

?It?s hard to put a word on it,? Lindsay remarked. ?The PCT is mentally and physically challenging. We?ll be traveling through three different states on a scenic, remote trail. It?s inspiring to know that we?re attempting to accomplish a feat not too many others have.?

According to the Pacific Crest Trail Association, out of the approximate 200 people that start out to hike the trail?s entirety, only 50 to 60 complete the hike each year. To complete the trail will not only be beneficial to the trio physically and mentally; they will also be hiking as role models to the millions of diabetics worldwide.

thanks again for all your support,
Rob
