So I sold a guy a perfect working minidisc player and a free blank disk, i even offered to demo the unit, but he said he knows how it works. Now this is the email i got, is this a threat?? What can i do??

I'm going to assume you weren't trying to f*ck with me and sell me damaged goods but I'm losing my patience. Maybe I'm overeacting and not using it right but this player is not working as advertised; it's skipping all the time, stays stuck on "updating TOC," etc.

If you were trying to rip someone off you picked the wrong guy. a) I work for the national media. b) I deal with the cops on a daily basis; Toronto police and RCMP. I know them on a first name basis and vice versa. If I don't hear from you soon and get this resolved, I'm calling in some favours.

.

UPDATE: Now he's trying to charge me with fraud!

well it doesn't matter whether he know or not.

What i want to know is i'm not responsible after i sold the unit right? It's clearly user incompetence.

You offered to demo the unit to show that it worked properly. He refused, and now he's pissed that it doesn't work properly?

Tell him to shove it.

I'm going to reply him with this, how about it?

Your email can be considered a threat. I give you perfect working minidisc player and a free blank disk, i even offered to demo the unit, and you said you know how it works. Therefore i'm not responsible for user imcompetence.

Wow, that's a lot of chest beating... nmost of it impotent, no doubt.

If the sale was "as is, no warranty implied or offered" tell him to get bent.

In the future, demo what you sell whether they want you to or not.

I'm assuming you both are in Toronto since you offered to demo the unit for him.

1) If you really want to hold onto the money he gave you, meet with him and show him how to use the unit.
2) Have him give you back the player and give him his money back.
3) Tell him the player worked when it left your possession and see if he's bluffing.

Option 1 is the most equitable. Option 2 is the easiest with no consequences, albeit you have to try to sell your player again. Option 3 is the easiest with possible consequences.

So let's just check here:

You didn't sell him a warranty. You sold him used goods. Paging Mr Jackass - "Caveat emptor". Point for Bluga.
You gave him a chance to check it out. He refused. Point for Bluga.
He claimed to know how it works. You accepted that and sold it. Point for Bluga.

So far you're on a hat trick here.

I'm going to assume you weren't trying to f*ck with me and sell me damaged goods but I'm losing my patience. Maybe I'm overeacting and not using it right but this player is not working as advertised; it's skipping all the time, stays stuck on "updating TOC," etc.

LMFAO. Empty threats. Nothing more.

a) Ooh, you work for the national media. Go ahead - bring in your horrible scandal of how stupid you were to not check out used goods before buying. Their response will be ... to quote Fausto1 ... "Hang on, I think I've got a rat's ass around here somewhere ..."
b) The reason he knows them so well is probably because he was arrested for something. The only "favours" he can call in are from Bubba in prison. And they aren't gonna help him.

Keep the email as proof if this asshat tries anything. (YGPM on the side.)

Don't sweat it, even if he is the Police chief he cannot come breaking down your door to arrest you.
This is a civil manner, the most he can do is drag you to court.

Generally the people who really have connections tend to write letters that are a little more intelligent. His letter is what I would describe as a bluff.

he's a dumba$$ who left a record of his threat...if anything, you can report him.

and this little media threat is kind of hilarious. I can just see Peter Jennings announcing on the news tonight that some dude in sometown, usa was mad b/c he bought a minidisc player from somebody else, and now he doesn't like the player...geez
