I just checked my chequing account five minutes ago to discover my balance was significantly higher than I expected. I assumed my tax return had been directly deposited, but I was still not sure why the balance was so high. I had a look at the account history and discovered the Gov't had deposited $1,597.45! I properly filed my taxes via QuickTax and was expecting only $440.

WTF is going on?

So, I'm $1200 richer than I expected. I'm going to sit on the money for a while, just to be safe...

UPDATE:

I checked my refund status online and was greeted with this:

Notice of changes and other important information

Thank you for filing this income tax return. This notice explains the results of our assessment and any changes we may have made. Please refer to the "Summary" for additional information.

As a result of a calculation error, we have revised your federal tax payable to $395.70. Your total payable has been adjusted accordingly.

We have revised your Ontario tax payable based on the available information.

We have recalculated your total federal non-refundable tax credits, and revised your total on line 350 to $2,400.

We have recalculated your Ontario non-refundable tax credits and revised your total to $918.

We have calculated your Ontario tax credits to be $160.92. The Ontario government finances these credits which help to compensate for municipal and school taxes, provincial sales tax, and any Ontario political contributions you made.

In July, we will let you know the goods and services tax/harmonized sales tax (GST/HST) credit and any related provincial credit you can receive for the period from July 2004 to June 2005.

We will deposit your refund into the account shown on your direct deposit application.

We have adjusted your federal claim for tuition and education amounts from $1,458 to $6,043. We have also adjusted your Ontario claim for tuition and education amounts from $1,444 to $6,165. This includes unused federal and unused provincial/territorial tuition and education amounts from prior years of $6,043 and $6,165, respectively.

If you have any questions about your assessment, please call our general enquiries service at 1-800-959-8281. If you need to contact another area of the Agency, see the telephone listings in the government section of your telephone book.

Looks like it's legit. Pimp. Time to buy some natty clothes...

nothing to be "wtf" about. I would be :)

I'd give the Treasury (or whatever agency does Canadian taxes) a call. $1,100 is a lot of money, and I don't think you want the feds coming after you, since it'll mean they'll be pulling The Tank away from other important matters.

Check is for chess, cheque is for money.

Anyhow, call the CCRA, they should be able to tell you if that's right or if you should wait for the black helicopters. :p

It's part of the funding for living outside of the GTA (Greater Toronto Area). The goverment has to help those in rural areas of Canada without running water and outhouses.

;)
