updated: Worst experiences starting a new job? I'm having one now

This is just for a summer job that I may stay at afterwards for a year.

for the last 2 months we have agreed on the start date of July 1st. The job is in Houston and I currently live in Los Angeles.

Today, not my boss, but another guy said to start getting paid on the 1st I have to be in Houston early next week to fill out an application do a background check and a drug test. (the first i have heard about any of these)

So basically I told them, there is no way I will be there then, so they will have to figure something out. I even agreed to change my plans and be tehre by the 29th, but they say that isnt good enough.

I've worked for them before. LAst summer it took a whole month after I started working before I got my first paycheck and I am not going through that again

update:
they schedules me for a drug test on the 27th and for orientation on the 30th...

even though I keep telling them I wont be there till the 30th!
 
My wife's first day experience was the absolute worst I've heard:

First day as the Admin for the CEO of a hospital. She's already replacing a woman the CEO can't stand, but has to get trained by her. Then at 10am, another lady in Administration (who is loved by all) has a heart attack and dies.

That's pretty bad! Did the lady have the heart attack while she was at work in the hospital?
