Hi all,

I'll make it short for those who dont wanna read the whole story below:
Got new HD and wont work with 2.5" external enclosure, but older HD does.
Compatibility problems?
2.5" enclosure
Hitachi HD

******Whole story begins********
I recently got a fancy new 7200 RPM Hitachi travelstar and the first thing I did was plug it into my old vantec enclosure so that I could check out what kinda performance was behind it.
Unfortunately, I was not able to get it to work under WinXP SP2.
The second I plugged it in, it would turn on, spin up, and then make some odd grinding noises, but after that there was no activity on the screen telling me that I had plugged in a new mass storage device.
Strangely enough, I have an old 1998 IBM Travelstar that was in the enclosure before and it is working just fine.
These results suggest to me that there might be something incompatible with these newer drives and my old vantec 2.5" enclosure.
Anyone else have similar problems with newer drives?

Try connecting the Hitachi drive internally to a desktop computer (with a laptop IDE adapater) or a laptop and see if the drive seems to work correctly. Perhaps the issue here is with the drive since it is new and untested.

Thanks for the suggestion bassyhead.

I got a simpletech PCMCIA adapter and it seems to work fine when plugged into my laptop and I attempt a cloning from old HD to new Travelstar.

I'm starting to wonder if it's a USB power problem with my NF2 mobo and the USB ports just arent putting out enough juice to get these HDs working?
I dunno. I'm just grasping at straws since I cant think of any other reason why.

So I got my new hitachi drive in the laptop and everything is peachy now.
I think the first thing I should mention is that the drive is fast, but not a helluva lot faster than the old 5400 RPM drive.(well, at least during bootup)

Anyways, so I decide to give the old USB enclosure another try, but this time I hook everything up to the laptop and guess what?
Everything works. The drive is detected as a mass storage thingy and it lets me browse the contents of the previous drive. Beautiful.

So, this suggests to me that my USB ports on my desktop are either too gimpy or the USB system is too bogged down with other crap from the other USB ports as to render it useless.

Thanks to bassyhead for the lone reply.
