*updated* Screw the working poor - Merry Christmas from Washington

Quotes from the article (in bold)

States would have the option to continue offering free school lunches to families cut off of food stamps. The Center on Budget said it was unlikely all states would do so.

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities said these were mostly working families with children.

Yea, don't cut stamps from the lazy persons that don't work at all - cut them from those toiling at minimum wage - the ones that many Americans don't mind helping. I know alot of people that hate 'welfare' but tolerate and promote food stamps for working poor - because at least they are contributing to the economy by working and spending, etc.

UPDATE:
Congress gives themselves a pay raise.

What can you do. Any system anywhere will be abused. At least the welfare in US is so low, it's hard to live on it, so you have to have some kind of another income. As opposed to Germany or France where welfare is so high, you don't have to work, and enjoy life at its fullest living on it.

i think there needs to be a better screening process

anyone remember on MTV

ol'dirty bastard drove up to the welfare office to get his check in a limo

WHY THE HELL WAS HE GRANTED WELLFARE!? 😕

Yeah what needs to happen is that these people that go and buy a bunch of food with food stamps and then buy alcohol and cigs with cash need to be cut from getting stamps. They obviously don't need alcohol/cigs to survive and should spend that money on food =/

These abuses are egregious - and should be dealt with - but you know, they are not the norm.

This is gonna affect the impoverished couple who both work full-time at the local dollar store trying to make ends meet after they've been layed off from their previously good job due to outsourcing.

This is gonna affect the single mom working 2 jobs because her husband died.

This IS NOT gonna affect the welfare mom on her sixth child with the sixth father. She'll be just fine.

Who would you rather help?

you think doing a wellfare reform or putting in a better screening process will deny the wrong people?

I'm talking about this article specifically. IMHO congress is targeting the wrong group of people to cut from the program. They are targeting the WORKING poor - not the 'want a hand out for generations' poor.

Screening is a whole other thread.

Take it out of the mouth of working families into the raise for themselves. Nice.

Congress should get paid the median income for the country - no more - no less.

that is a good idea or the average

to make their own income more they have to better the country 🙂

but i see what your talking about with this article

 What do you expect from a morally bankrupt administration, one that out of one side of it's mouth spouts invectives about "supporting the troops" and out of the other, cuts veteran's benefits?
They are the hypocrites, wolves in sheep's fur, Domestic enemies of the Constitution (i.e. P.A.T.R.I.O.T Act)

Yes, because we all know the admin is the congress, right?

Yes, because we all know the admin is the SAME PARTY AS congress.

That and Prez has to sign the bills after they get passed. So unless you think he is not going to sign it your point is moot.

The admin didn't write the bill.

Who cares what party it is? Blaming a MAN for the actions of other men is absurd.

Why is it activist haters from either side seem to lose their ability to reason?

Actually, I think they should be paid minimum wage and nothing more. With all the campaign contributions and other dealings they have, they don't need to be using our tax dollars for their salaries.

😕
In ancient Greece, senators weren't paid and you know what the result was? The senate was entirely wealthy, and paid by "lobbyists" or by continuing their previous work. The reason for a well paid legislature is to make it an equally viable career for all people.

I don't see how senators and reps living off "contributions" and lobbying money rather than their wages would be a good thing. I can't even believe people complain about what they get paid, considering state college football coaches get paid MILLIONS. UT's Mack Brown makes twice as much as the university president...

What a weak argument. Football coaches do not take benefits away from poor hardworking Americans. The money they are paid is not rediverted from social programs.

Yes, people complain when people making well over 100,000 dollars a year cut their PALTRY benefits and increase their own.

Are you kidding? Who do you think pays for college football? It sure as hell isn't ticket sales.

In Ancient Greece, one could not be a senator unless one was a member of the wealthy class. A plebian could not become a Senator. One needed to be a land owner, hence wealthy.
In Modern America, one cannot become a senator without the support of wealth, either one's own or that of your supporters and ultimately, political party.
It's not that we're complaining about WHAT they are paid, simply that the perceived value is not there. The corporations get FAR more value for their money than do the citizens of this country.
Corporate PAC donations should not be allowed, nor should corporations that are Headquartered off shore be allowed to contribute.

A 1.88% cost of living raise isn't all that great, and is actually lower than the 3% average inflation rate for this year. Hell, I'd be pissed if I didn't get a better raise than that next year.
