UPDATED question 9700 or 9800 pro wasted on a 1700+?

I have a 1700+ on a K7S5A (It doesnt OC well at all)

Anyway, I have a radeon 8500 now. Would upgrading to a 9700 or 9800 be a waste on my current processor? I will upgrade to a 2500+ barton probably eventually.

EDIT:

The consideration was basically this:

In my box I have teh 1700+ with the radeon 8500 and an ECS K7S5A

In my wifes a P3 800 and a Radeon 7200

So if I got a 9700 the 8500 would go onto the P3 and then eventually the 1700+ would go into that box when I upgrade it.

Is that a smart upgrade path? or is it smarter to go barton first? Whats the cheapest cpu/mobo upgrade? I dont know how far apart I have to spread upgrades and the upgrade is much more important to me than my wife so the P3 upgrade is not high priority

upgrade the CPU then the video as prices will go down more on the video card. 1700+ and 9700/9800 will result in a bottle neck. 2500+ and 9700/9800 is a great combo

If you have a T-bred 1700+ and a motherboard with little overclocking options, use this mod guide.

And mod the CPU with the defroster trick. The T-bred A should do at least 1.8gig, and the B model 2.0gig with a little voltageHere

Hi there.

I upgraded my 1.2Ghz Athlon from a Geforce II GTS to a Radeon 9700 Pro, and I was absolutely astounded by the difference.

Go for it, its suprising what an old CPU can do you know!

It wouldn't be completely wasted... you'd be able to run buttloads of AA and AF without any change in fps.

That's exactly what I was thinking. If you really need a faster card then go ahead. How long do you think it would be before your cpu got upgraded?

Big difference...

Our 2.4's are faster than any current AMD offering...

😀

They better be able to scale with the 9800 well.

Got a 1700 xp and going to be getting a 9800 np some time this week. Will help seeing as my geforce 2 Ti is only displaying red now 😛
Going to have to see what the warrenty is and see if I can get it fixed for a backup/2nd computer video card.

1700+ and 9700NP are a nice match,I`m using this combo right now and don`t find it a bottleneck,so yes it`s worth it,especially if you was using something like a GF2 Ti like I was.

On that same board I got a bigger jump in performance from a GF2TI to a 9700PRO than what I got from a 1600+ to a 2600+. You will notice a very big diffrence in performance by just changing the vid card.

Yea as long as your cpu is at the least an xp amd or p4 your set for some time on that side. Myself I probly wont upgrade mine tille the 64 processors come out. Motherboard tops out at 2100 xp and I have a 1700 so not much performance there, just gotta get rid of my geforce 2 Ti since it's only showing red now heh

My Radeon 9700 Pro loves my...

Athlon 800!! 🙂

lol, Yes I am actually running this setup with 256 PC133. the 9700 must be crying.. I get 6500s in 3dmark2001. planning to upgrade sometime soon though.. either a new proc or NF7-S & Barton.

Damn, talk about an out of balance system. Even my ti4200 scores more 3dmarks than that..

Oh yeah, tell me about it! I'll be upgrading the CPU asap. I wanted to get a 1700+ but seems the lowest around here is a 1800+... some places only have the 2000+.
