What, they don't have disaster recovery and fault tolerance for that stuff? Guess it doesn't bring in that much money...

Its in beta, so no money is being brought in just yet. But, alot of money and time has been invested into it, thats for sure. This is just one of the regional data cetners, there are some 4 more in the US (I beleive). They're all mirrored, but its just a matter of getting the sucker back up to support the player capacity they've been planning for. But, getting this guy back up and running will take some time even if the data was backed up and sent off site.

of all places, why would you build a data center in Florida, home of rampant electrical storms and hurricanes?

the worst thing that ever happens at my datacenter in NYC is random evacuations because of bomb/terrorist scares. heh

They didn't build it in Florida, it is in Northern Virginia.
Emergency Update: Servers Drying Out - Block on 09/19/04
Enough electrical power is now available at the Virginia datacenter for us to analyze the extent of any damage that might have occurred as a result of the direct tornado hit Friday night, but the hardware is not yet dry enough to be powered up. The good news is that there's a possibility that we will be able to begin carefully powering up and testing the hardware late this evening. Our on-site team of network engineers is working around the clock on the situation, and we will be posting another update here for everyone tomorrow afternoon. The pictures linked to below give a general impression of the damage sustained by the building housing our servers.
The US World of Warcraft beta test will remain offline for the remainder of Sunday and into Monday, and possibly longer. As soon as we have an estimate on when we will be able to restore service, we'll share that information here. Our thanks go out again for your continued patience and support.

Second picture is awesome!

But they had to provide "proof" since there are people crazy enough on their forums that they'd think it was some conspiracy to cheat them.
