After reading and reading, and more reading... i decided to set my new rig up with an opteron 175 as opposed to a 4400+. It seems a 175 can hit 3Ghz *fairly* easily.

So, if anyone wants to tell me whats wrong with this set up or whats good about it, it would be appreciated. This is the *complete* new setup.

Opteron 175 (With a zalman heatsink)
X1900XTX
Thermaltake ArmorV8000 case (the one with like 18 bays)
DFI LANparty Ultra-d NF4 mobo
2G OCZ PC3200 (probably titanium)
X-fi sound card
74Gig raptor
G5 Laser mouse...

I think thats it.... i know i didnt need to throw *everything* in there.. but im open to all opinions. How does this look to everyone, and... should i go with the opteron 175 as opposed to lower models? Will it OC better? You guys have me convinced that Optys blow the hell out of X2's (even the 4400+ i was getting.. :( ).

I don't think any Dual core A64 chip will hit 3.0Ghz on air easily, i'd get the 160/170 but after that it just gets silly.

See if the money saved won't get you up to a raptor 150 instead.

Go with a 165 and use the retail heatsink.

go for this Ram

And enjoy the few hundred bucks you just saved while having a computer just as powerful.

Inform me please... whats conroe? New opty core?

Also.. robert... does the 165 OC as high as the 175 would?

It's been a while since i've looked into building a new rig and i havent exactly kept myself up to date... i just want the best bang for my buck and the fastest i can get so that i wont have to upgrade for a while. Im willing to spend upwards of 2 grand. I just need input from people who know more about the new stuff than i do. :(

Conroe is the new chip coming out for Intel, according to a bunch of websites, Anandtech included, its supposed to be significantly faster than AMD's dual core lineup.

what about the pricing of dual-core? I usually don't buy a new fresh product until is out there for at least 6 months.

175 doesn't really clock better than 165s and 170s.

If you want to get one, get a CCBBE or CCB1E stepping, CCBWE will almost NEVER do 3 Ghz ona ir.

Go with a 165 or 170, and go with an X1900XT instead of a XTX. You will save quite a bit of money, and the computer will be just as powerful.
