I'm in S.FL... was just doing some maint. to the pool today (too cold to swim, but, chemicals and such) and just as I was remembering I had my cellphone on my holster and reaching down to make sure it was still there so I could take it somewhere safe I watched it fall into the pool. Well, that sucked. At least I Didn't lose an arm.

I fished it out fairly quickly but not quick enough, power was off (shorted somewhere I guess) before it came out. I quickly took the battery out and rinsed it with fresh water. I have since taken it mostly apart (can't get the keypad part off enough though) and have it drying out but I'll probably need to replace it. Who knows. If y'all don't make too much fun of me I'll post an update tomorrow or the next day and let you know how drying it out worked.

Specs: Motorola v400, not under contract. So, not the end of the world. I believe I can get a new RAZR phone for $99 with no contract through my employer deal with Cingular on Monday, worst case.

[update 1] Well, I took a chance (it seemed dry enough) and tried it out and it powered up but the LCDisplay wasn't working right. Not one to give up, I searched some more and found some better disassembly instructions and got it all taken apart and swabbed some of the areas that looked wet and/or not clean, put it back together and now it seems to be about 99% working.

Only thing I've noticed that's wrong is it'll power on by itself, which is better than powering off by itself. Anyway, makes calls and such, so I'll leave it off overnight and see if the auto-power on (won't stay off with battery inserted) problem disappears. [/update 1]

[update 2 - 02/20/06] Apparently not a popular thread, but, for closure it appears to be working fine now. No more random power on / off issues, etc. since it's dried out I may have lucked out... but I could experience some other problems in a few days/weeks I guess. So, in the interim, I'll be keeping my eye on hot deals. [/update 2]

[update 3 - 03/03/06] Worked around the pool again yesterday, left the phone far away from the pool! The phone has been working pretty well except that the screen doesn't always turn on when I flip open the phone. I noticed that the switch that turns the screen on/off was sticking and it wasn't an LCD issue. I delt with it like that for a few days. I took it back apart today and cleaned that LCD Switch contact and put it back together and it seems to be working fine right now. No hot deals on phones that I want (still). At least it's not snowing. [/update 3]

[update 4 - 03/11/06] In case someone bumps this from the other thread, I haven't had a problem since 03/03/06 update. [/update 4]

For future reference, you should rinse with de-ionized water if anything, I don't think that rinsing with tap water will make much of a difference (not that I think that rinsing with de-ionized water will help much either, but it's better than tap water).

Buy a RAZR and I'm coming to your house to kick your ass, get a phone that actually has the feature set of a phone you'd be buying in 2006, not from 2004 (RAZR = V600)

<-- Tampa Bay Area, I can't be very far off

Didn't have any distilled water handy and I was going to look for some rubbing alcohol but figured that wouldn't have made much difference. I'm not big on the RAZR but I think bang for the buck it's still the best option for me at cingular right now, I'll see though, have to check the website (via our B2B site) and find ot what's available. It's down now, for maint I guess.

[update] 2 days later so far so good, see update in 1st post. [/update]

I fell off of a dock, into the lake, last summer with my cell phone.
I removed the battery and dried it out, and it worked fine as well.
 for you!

I left my Nokia 6230 in my pants and put it in the washer and dryer and it still works.
