Hello, I was going to pla ythis game today (MAX PAYNE) and well when i popped the cd in my drive, the drive wouldn't autorun it like it always did. So I went to My computer to double click on the CD drive, and the drive isn't there anymore! So I go to the windows contro lpanel and find that I have the yellow Asterisk besides my Primary and Secondary Ultra ATAT controller devices, in my hard disk controllers group. I tried updating the drivers but windows only finds the same drivers I have and says it can do nothing. This hasn't happened to me before and i don't knwo what to do. My system is working fine except i can't use my cd-rom drive. My cd-rom drive entry is now gone from my device list i nthe system panel also. Anyone know what i can do t o fix this problem? Thanks in advance

My system specs are:
1.4ghz thunderbird
ECS k7s5A
WD 20.0gb hard drive
256mb ram
radeon video card
sony 52x cdrom drive

I had the same problem as you and I had to uninstall Intel's UATA controllers and just use the .inf file instead. But, I can't enable DMA on my 40.9GB Fujitsu UATA hard-drive.

you didn't say what OS you're using but if you're using win9x/ME then look for the NoIDE entry in your registry.
Click Start, then Run... , and type regedit
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\IOS
if you should see a value named "NoIDE". Delete it, close regedit and reboot!

i am suing WIN98 SE. Just checked on m yregistry and under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\IOS I only have three "names":

(Default) (Value not set)
Start 00
StaticVxD "*IOS"

that is all, any ideas? thanks again

Strange--I had the same thing happen this week. I have a promise ATA133 card creating the problem. Both onboard IDE contrlers were dead. As a quick fix I put the CD on the Promise card. I will try your regedit. RRRRRRRR

assuming that you haven't installed incorrect ide drivers, boot the pc with a good win98 startup floppy & at the A: prompt type "fdisk /mbr" & hit enter. remove the floppy & reboor to see if the drives are back!

Ok, I now have to reboot my pc 2 times-3 times to enter windows, and I my motherboard is also giving me checksum errors every once in a while (i got two checksum errors about a week ago o nthe same day, haven't since).

The reason why i have to rebbot 3 times is that If i turn on my computer, it will give me an error right before entering windows that "cannot read from drive c:". Then i have to reboot and enter in safe mode and remove the controller drivers. Then i reboot, windows detects the drivers, I install them and I pick the option to NOT RESTART WINDOWS, because if i do its the same process all over. When i pick to NOT RESTART is when i can use the pc (like now). I should also add that the pc is running slower, especially hard disk tasks, and my cdrom hasn't worked either since the beginning of my problems. :(

Please help. Someone told me it might be my motherboard: K7S5A, but i would like to avoid having to RMA it, cause ive never done it, and i am afraid it will take too long :( But i will RMA it if i have to. Please help me :(

go get a new CMOS battery....reset the BIOS...you have your ECS driver CD? go into if you can get to it your Control Panel DeviceManager see your CD devices...dbl click...uninstall/remove any and all....do not reboot yet....see IDE controllers...dbl click uninstall/remove then reboot...make sure you have both Win 98 CD and your ECS drivers CD...if it asks for them ,edit. battery and BIOS reset optional try other first
