remagavon - thanks for the useful info.
i was hoping that you could also provide a clarification. the specs say s-video input. how is the image quality through that connector? if you have tried it, that is.
none of my tvs have component video input so i use the s-video and the image is uually pretty good.

I'm pretty sure that's what I used, I know for sure I hooked up my xbox with s-video to the lcd, and I'm pretty sure I tried DirecTV through it as well, but I don't remember if it was s-video or composite. Either way both were the same; fantastic with regards to picture in picture, but not so good fullscreen. It isn't unwatchable, but like I said if you've ever seen an LCD tv before and know how they look worse than a normal TV, just magnify that effect more and you've got this fullscreen quality. Similarly, on my Sharp Aquos LCD TV (actually my parents have it now, supposed to go in their kitchen) when I hooked that up to a PC through s-video out, the quality was pretty bad, *even though it supported HD! (720p)* It's kinda the same situation, the LCD supports a much higher resolution (1600x1200) and the TV is a lower resolution. I'm glad to help, I know big purchases are difficult decisions.:)

not bad if you watch it from distance,
if you wanna use the pc at the some time, just do the PiP mode

SVHS VCRs almost always have S-video outputs, non SVHS VCRs do not. There is no compelling technical reason for this, because both S and non-S VHS formats modulate the Y/C signals with a different separation than is used in broadcast composite standards. Laserdisk players also almost always have S-outputs, but there is no compelling technical reason why they do, because the laserdisk standard does use the same Y/C separation as is used in broadcast standard composite video.

(S)VHS VCRs will not normally have component outputs because it is not a component format. I have several professional SVHS decks and duplicators and none of them do.

DV, DVD, BetaSP, DigiBeta, D-x, and most other more modern professional video standards are component formats and good decks for those formats would have component outputs.

VCR's look bad because the VHS format supports about 240-250 lines. I can't remember the exact figure. S-VHS supports aboaut 300-350lines I think. Not TOTALLY sure but DV supports 500 lines and is dam amazing compared to VHS imo.

It will look crap on any high res display because the resolution is so poor to start off with. Crap in crap out. You can get some software to tidy up the stuff but it still won't look 'great'.

It will be watchable on the display though. When fullscreen it will just show the flaws in the lack of resolution of the vhs tape.

Only VCR's I have seen that have component are High-end VCR's (HD-VHS?). Most of the VCR's in the upper end of the consumer level have S-Video. But why not get a Progressive Scan DVD player? Those can be had for <$100.

$709 is twice as much as I would *ever* spend on a monitor. If I ever need 20" of space I'll get a CRT. 17" LCD works fine here :)

Got mine yesterday. Sadly, I had one stuck pixel. Does massaging the screen actually work? Also, The backlight leakage in the top right is pretty damn annoying; so is the screen door effect. One of the three I can deal with, but not all. I might try an exchange before a return. Anyone care to share their experience with this?

Just wondering what you thought of it if you got it. I had a bunch of problems with mine so its getting exchanged.

What PC is it hooked up to?

What video card?

You are using DVI, right?

No, mine is hooked up to analog right now. I am noticing a big time screen door effect and there is a lot of ghosting at the moment. Im hooked up to a GF2 card. When I go back to Madison next weekend, I wll be hooking this up to a radeon 9700 AIW through DVI. Dell is shipping me a new 2001FP this week because of the ghosting problems and the fact that I have 6 dead pixels on the one that was sent to me. I dont really notice them, but I hate to fork out $750 for a monitor that isn't perfect.

VCRs are not 480i... regular DVDs are 480i..
VCRs are like 240i

Also computer monitors in generals suck as a full screen video device. It will end up blurry, dim, washed out, and it will catch a lot of the video's artifacts.
