EDIT 2: It looks like it went successfully to 3.1.2. Currently doing a restore from a backup to get all my info back on there and I notice in iTunes it says 3.1.3 is now available...OMGWTFBBQ!!1!

EDIT: Finally figured out that in the Pwnage tool when you select which device you have I had to specify 3Gs in order for it to read my 3g ipsw. Every time I selected the regular iPhone it said wrong firmware bundle. I built my own ipsw and it's currently updating. So either I'm set, or I'm about to be completely screwed because I shouldn't have done the 3Gs one, haha.

I'm currently running 3.0 on my iPhone 3G. I've had it jailbroken for quite some time, which is why I never went to the 3.1.x, but today I figured I might as well make the jump. I am signed on with AT&T so upgrading the baseband or whatever is not an issue. (My main reason for jailbreaking in the first place is to get custom text message tones.)

I read multiple places that if you are using AT&T you can just update to 3.1.2 normally through iTunes and then jailbreak it rather painlessly from there (other than redoing all the custom apps, etc). I downloaded the update and it failed to install, and then my phone was stuck in Recovery Mode (iTunes symbol showing to plug in the phone). I tried doing a Restore from iTunes multiple times, but kept getting random errors (1611, 2006, 2009 and so forth). I read Apple's site and it said try using a different USB port and restart the computer and nothing worked. It kept failing with random error messages and the phone continued to be stuck in Recovery Mode.

I finally ran redsn0w 0.7 that I had from last time and it "re-jailbroke" the phone and got it to boot up normally again. I didn't lose any info, as all of my jailbroken info was in tact.

Question being - have any of you experienced this before? Anything I can do to actually get to 3.1.2? I read a few people had their phones bricked trying to go to 3.1 and had to be replaced because not even a restore would work.

Sorry for the long post...thanks in advance!

I had an issue where Windows iTunes couldn't upgrade the firmware on my iPhone that sounds much like what you are describing. It had something to do with Bonjour or iTunesHelper getting out of sync with iTunes in terms of versions. I would try over and over and it would give me one of three errors.

Finally I went to my work computer, installed iTunes and upgraded painlessly there. So that's my advice - try another computer, or use VMWare to create a virtualized clean install and use that.

I was doing this on my MacBook with the latest version of iTunes. I'll have to give it another go tomorrow, and try another machine if it fails again. My only worry is getting it stuck in recovery mode again and not being able to get it back out.

Still no news on 4.0? If it's close enough I'll probably just wait until it comes out and they get a jailbreak for it. No sense in going through this PITA only to do it again in a couple months.

Regardless, I appreciate the help!

I had the same thing happen with my 3GS. The following link got me out of recovery mode:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WVMo1WN1c0&feature=related

There has been no word on 4.0 yet, so you should go to 3.1.2. You should never use itunes to upgrade if you want to Jailbrake your phone!!!!

Thanks for the link. I thought programs like redsn0w only jailbreak the phone on whatever version is currently on it, not actually perform an upgrade AND jailbreak? Or am I wrong there? I can definitely use redsn0w 0.9 to jailbreak, but how do I get to 3.1.2 first, without using iTunes?

Fell flat on my face trying to upgrade again. Tried manually restoring to a custom ipsw, etc through the latest version of iTunes (9.0.3 today) and I keep getting the 16xx errors even though I killed the iTunes Helper process. I've also tried selecting both the 3.0 and 3.1.2 ipsw files using the latest pwnage tool and it keeps saying "wrong firmware bundle selected."

Currently using redsn0w again to "re-jailbreak" to 3.0 and at least get it working back at that level.

I know, I didn't. It will take awhile for them to throw together a jailbreak for it and even then it doesn't look like it will be worth it. Sounds like I'm waiting for 4.0 at this point.

So how do you upgrade the iPhone when you want the latest upgrade and to jailbreak it? I thought you just upgrade in iTunes then JB the phone. Does the jailbreak app like redsn0w upgrade the phone for you too?

It depends on what tools you use. But for the most part, you create a Jailbreaked firmware update and apply that in place of the official

Take a look at the following site and follow the tutorial of your choice. They walk you though the whole process, and give you links for everything you need. http://www.iclarified.com/entries/index.php?caid=2&scid=11&seid=2

Very good link. I found something similar that helped me out yesterday. My issue was that I couldn't use the stock Apple update at all. It wasn't until I created my own custom ipsw in pwnage that it let me use it. Or it could have been that I was in DFU instead of Recovery mode.

All I know is that it's really not that complicated to do, but since I don't update very often it's like relearning each time.
